...powered up the HD24, then powered up the BRC.....

BRC initializes then shows "nofo"!

Try to select a song on the HD24 and it's froze-up tight.... no buttons work.....

I shut down the BRC and cold boot the HD24 (the front-panel power button was frozen too......)

It boots back no problem except the song that was selected when it froze now had a length of 0!!

It wasn't a big deal, because I have everything on a safety copy, so I could easily restore it....

It just goes to show you though... it's not a question of IF the system crashes and you MIGHT find use for a backup -- it's WHEN the system crashes you will NEED your backups!!!!

BTW, anyone else experience HD24 crashes yet?

Never. And I've been using the shit out of it too. Hmmmm.....

backups are crucial, as anyone knows who works with hard drives.

It's just funny..in the "ole" analog days, backups and safeties usually meant something a generation down, or "non-original" and I don't really recall using either words much, much less, (like in NEVER) actually backing up multitrack tapes. 1/2 track mixes...maybe....

With the advancement of sound technology, it's weird that my first sentence is SO important. Hell, now I even get "scared" after a good take, if I don't "save" or backup.

which reminds of this old MCI 1" machine I used to use....no brakes, ...just fast speed in the opposite direction.. (in other words, tape streaching possible:eek: ).....but it NEVER happened at a "critical" time....phew!!

I'm sure glad my tape deck doesn't crash like that! :D

I know my recording will still be there the next time I fire up the machine.

No brakes huh? On that type of machine do you have to rock the tape into position using FF and RW and then stopping the transport before it starts moving too fast?

I've been working with computers since 1984 and I do know how crucial having a back-up copy can be. I'm just glad I don't have to back up 2500' of tape.

The computers I used to work on a long time ago used disc platters with five in a stack that were about 16" in diameter. The hard drives that are available now hold a 100 thousand times the information that those did at a fraction of the size.

We also used tape machines.

Digital tape decks can crash just like computers.... try doing anything useful if the linear head that reads the tape format track goes on you....

(and it's not a preformtted tape, so that the tape doesn't play easily on other machines because the formatting alignment was slightly off...)

And in the analog world, tape can snap, it wears away as you play it over and over (along with your sound), the threading mechanism can ball it up.........

Hmmm.... just how DO we get anything actually recorded when Murphy has such a grudge against us?!?!?

No guarantee with tape either... as a matter of fact,

Bruce, you still use the BRC? Are you running the ADATs beside it?
I abandoned my BRC choosing to clock the HD directly rather than daisey chain clock thru the BRC to the HD.

Sometimes I wonder!

That is true, but the odds are in our favor. :D

Many computer problems can be contributed to "Pilot Error."

Yeah, I know... but I like the track arm/disarming on the BRC (bigger buttons for 'ol bear paws here!), and the other buttons.... it's just convenience....

I'm hoping they'll put out a new remote for the HD24 along the lines of the BRc... there's a rumour floating around that they're supposed to........!

Seriously! I spent 1K on a freakin' remote that doesn't even clock propely (compared to outboard word clocks!)

Be nice to get the money's worth out of it!!!

:D
