My first dance remix...

sounds like it starting to come together...I remember the first mix which was very good...this sounds like its getting bang up to date (though isnt autotune dead yet? ;) )

From what you've got so far I suggest some sub bass behind the kick..at the moment its kinda stuck by itself..maybe even some heavy industrial stabs/blaps behind it every now and then panning out in stereo??..but then again Im sure you know the genre better than an oldie like me...I dance like an uncle at a wedding now :)

The "kick drum" is pretty dominant now - maybe a bit too much so. Other than that I love the tune. Your vocals are so good and they make this so cool. Top 40 material for sure. I'm not a dance listener (well only what my daughter plays when we're driving) but I think you've got a hit here....

:cool::D:cool::D

I know nothing about this genre, but I wanted to hear some sub bass action, too. The opening swoosh about ripped my ears off -- could be that I'm not used to my monitors, but I wanted to turn down the high highs some, and the rest of the song seemed kind of bright to me, too, but that may have just been aftershock from the opener.

(I sent a couple of my guitar riffs off to a friend who does house music - sort of felt like I was selling a couple of my kids for scientific experimentation :D - haven't heard what he can do with them yet (if anything).)

Overall, your song sounds well put together to me.

It sounds pretty good to me. Though I definitely think something should be done with the "kick". It definitely needs to be bassier, and it could probably stand to be pushed further back in the mix.

The ending is a little strange. It just kind of ... stops.

Golly JohnPaul!

There's not a thing wrong with what you got there...except the 'boik boik boik' thing that substitutes for a bass drum.

I kept waiting for that 'bass action' too.....the whole sounds like a lightened-up breakdown between pumping sections.

It's what's missing that's significant: that big rolling bass figure, way out front; and the big boom, 4-on-the-floor bass figure that make me wanna really move.

I'd love to load the file, absent to 'boiking' to add a bass and bass drum to see if I could blast the temp to boil. I listen to this stuff all the time. I love your mixes...but the most important element...that which makes booties shake: high powered bottom, cut sometimes, and started again, to make it dynamic.....is just not in there. It's like trying to make a soup with no water!

So close. What you have is excellent...and I dig your voice a lot. But, alas not quite complete, compared to what I hear playing in the clubs and on the radio.

Here's what I was waiting for:

Thanks a lot for the feedback, everyone! I just uploaded a new version of the mix clip after listening to your suggestions. Let me know if there's anything missing any this one: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8183449

Thanks again!

I turned down the Hi-s for the opening swoosh. Please let me know if it is ok now or if the rest of the song still has too much of a hi-sound.

I turned down the volume of the kick a little bit and turned up the bass, let me know what you think.

really good! what recording software do you use?

Thanks cj! I use Cubase Essential 4 and the VST instruments are from EastWest Goliath.

Man that's touching distance of the finishing post...funny i find this easier to critique than the rock stuff (been into electronic music since the 80s) any way

the kick and bass is are huge improvements...begs to get blasted out..pity its only 10am here, possibly a touch more verb on the kick

I think you've added some industrial sounds at the beginning..if you did they work..great start to the song

The claps are great but either need to be moved further back and/or be broken up as they obscure your excellent vocals

Now I really want Goliath..great sounds there, bang up to date...and the best thing is that this sounds like a remix..you can hear what the original melody would have sounded like and its been chopped up for the dance floor

great work JP...cant wait until it's finished

JP...here y' go. pic/1000 words.

Oh yeah...there's a bad transient pop at 12 seconds on the far left...might want to check your tracks before pressing.

added...holy carp, JP. I'm listening, and your FX treatments and voice are giving me chills....listen real loud! A pleasure being a footstool for your art, dude! I think you do really really great, creative work. And the message :^) and feel tells me it is, indeed, a winner.

I got the bass drum sound by finding a patch similar to the one you had, and jamming the bass full throttle, cutting the mids about 12db, and cutting the trebs off. Then I added a 4k narrow Q spike to 12db when it sounded too dull in the mix.

The bass patch is Roland XV "Cheap Syncom". I played some laid out parts in near subsonic octaves. The EQ on the input {Mackie DXM pre's] was +12 bass; mids -6; treb +6.

This was a lot of fun...never did this genre, but it fatugues ears real quick!

Oh yeah....I also re-EQ'd the master file. On my monitors, the high end 4 to 8k was sizzling. And I boosted 500H range...and that got some guts going in your original low-end work. Hope you like what I did. Now, I dance!

Thanks again for making that mix of the song, Jeff! I liked it! Now, you've given me some good ideas to work on, like how the bass drum goes faster before the chorus. Almost forgot about that one, haha. The bass drum sound you added does sound better than the "boik" sound. I'm gonna try to modify it like your suggestion or find some other drum sound to layer it. I also liked the bass. After listening to both, my mix does sound somewhat "papery" right now.

Thanks kcearl! I'll lower the volume of the claps and also remove them from the second verse (they weren't suppose to be there, hah).

For this genre of music, I don't know if I would recommend Goliath. It's good when you need a sampling of different genres, but it's kinda limited. Like for this mix, I had to modify a lot of the sounds to get what I wanted. The bass drum, for instance, was actually part of a longer sound effect (that wasn't really a drum), and I just used the first part of it.

Yeah, definitely sounds better now.

I'm not sure if I prefer the second mix or Jeff's actual kick mix. They're both pretty good.
