My first 2 recordings

I would appreciate feedback on two songs. Junco Partner and Be My Wife these are my first attempts at recording and there are two different mixes for each song.

I would appreciate any feedback, but would like to get some specific feedback on levels, mix, effects etc... anything that I can learn from.

I listened to Junco 2.

Not bad. This song is just screaming for at least a little percussion.

The vox were a bit loud in relation to the music for my taste. The acoustic guit sounded a bit 'blah'. I don't know how it was recorded and can't really suggest anything about it. The bass part was a bit muffled and didn't have a very charismatic sound.

Hope that helps a little.

Great Stuff

The vocals on Junco Partner are over powering but your vocals are great. I really like them. So you should really work around them to add a bit more definition to the rest of the mix. It's a bit muddled with all the acoustic stuff. Maybe too many layers?? I would be dying to do a mix with your vocals. Anyway, I can't really diss My Wife since it's very balanced and greatly traditional blues song. Dude, you do sing well.

Thank you all for taking the time to listen. I appreciate all of your comments.

Here is what I used to record these two songs if it helps with the feed back.

On these two recordings I recorded to a Tascam DP-01FX, which I have since sold and am now using a Boss BR-1600CD. I transfered the files to the Boss to mix the songs and used the internal "Live" Mastering Tool kit with the default settings. Everything was recorded through the mic except for the bass on Junco MSTR 2, I went straight in with that.

Guitars:
1988 Martin HD28 PSE 6 string
1997 Guild American 12 String

Bass:
I have no clue what it is. I picked it up at a pawn shop for $60.00

Mic's:
Behringer B2-Pro

Besides a couple of minor issues, by my ear it sounded impressive. You got the PM, but just to post up here as well. Excellent sounds, man. Excellent playing and writing as well. Again, I found it impressive. :) :) :) :) :)
 
Wayne, I listened to Junco Partner MSTR first and that mix wasn't that great - too much vocals and kinda flat. So then I listened to Junco Partner (the first one above) and it was much better balance/panning/etc. Guess I got the wrong version the first time :D
Good songwriting / playing / singing - traditional yet still very original. Nice theme/story to it.
I like it! :D

There is no actual choice of vocal key before it kicks in. Sounds like you are singing different intervals with each of the vocal switches.

Solo at 1:24 at sounds, pretty good chops there.

Sounds like there is a lot of palm muting noise in the lower frequencies.


Be my wife mix 3

A little too much compression on the into guitar track. Change threshold and attack, and work on having only a couple db of gain reduction. I'm sure that will help.

Spread the harmony backup vocals a little left and right of the center vocal channel, it will make it sit a little nicer I think.

The guitar solo around 1:50 shouldnt be panned hard right in comparison to the rhythm guitar in the left speaker. It sits lopsided. You need to find a place for the rhythm tracks(the double tracked rhythm), somewhere in both channels during the solo.




I think the thing that is hurting these recordings the most is the acoustic over compression. Try using less, I'm sure you'll be happier with the improved overall dynamics of your recordings.



I like both of the songs, good flow, pretty cool tracks.
 
I like it. I listened to the first one. It's nice acoustic stuff and the guitar in the right is good. You have an enviable singing voice too.
