Armistice
Son of Yoda
For those that read the first thread....
Went back to this place last Sunday - everything ready on time, get all set up, have a few crappy first take attempts and am just starting to warm up...
then I hear in the headphones, quite distinctly, a band in one of the practice rooms... sheesh... didn't actually hear it while recording last time, just found it in the tracks later...
I stop, looking through the control room window at some device that this is all going through - I'm not making a sound, and I'm watching little green LEDs go up and down in time with the bass playing from the practicing band.
I tell the engineer - he comes and has a listen in the studio, hears it just as plainly as I can, shifts some baffles around, which do nothing, then heads back to control room. Just then the band stopped - "let's try for a take while they're not playing" he suggests... like that's going to work, but what else can I do, so off we go - halfway through I can hear it again so I stop, throw my arms in the air, put my acoustic down gently, meet the engineer outside and tell him that this just ain't gonna work, I'm not happy about it, and where's the boss?
The boss isn't in, I pack up, take down the boss's phone number, tell the engineer to be sure to tell the boss what just happened, and that I'd call the boss the next day (Monday).
Go to car, ring v. disappointed girlfriend who bought me the time in the first place, dissuade her from coming over to kill engineer, go home.
Won't go into the rest, but after a series of phone calls and emails, late this afternoon (Wednesday) I finally get an agreement to refund half the money and that we'll have to "agree to disagree" and "no hard feelings".
Whatever pal - trust me, you have some problems there. I'll await the cheque.
Strangely enough, I went home on the Sunday and immediately got out the mics, set them up again, and after a bit further experimentation, finally, after a year of trying, found a combination and orientation which I think will give me acceptable results. Woo hoo!
I'm hoping never to post "is it just me or does everyone else have trouble getting a good sound from their NT5/MXL603 SD condenser?" posts in the mic forum again...
Live and learn, will be staying true to the spirit of being a homereccer for the rest of this album methinks...
Will wait until I can afford a "real" real studio before leaving the house again....
