ok im recording a ten song CD for my metal band this we are in a insulated rehersal studio room that is 15X15 with tall cealings.. the room sound is almost perfect. what i plan to do..

first off

My Equipment:
2 Shure sm57's
1 Shure sm58
1 Ev mic
1 Tascam Studio 8 (8 track reel to reel)

My Plan:
1. Record a crappy Cheap recording first for a means of time.
2. go in with head phones on lay on individual recordings of guitar and bass
3. play back the guitar and bass into the drummers head phones and record him playing to the guitar and bass tracks.
4. add in vocals
5. mix
---------

now i plan to record the bass lined into the board. my amp has XLR out.

Guitars i plan to mic the cab with the sm57 (marshall JCM 2000 DSL with 4x12 slant cab)

now DRUMS! what to do what to do? i was assuming put the 57's on boom stands two over heads right and left. with the 58 in the kick drum?

any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated! PS drummer palys double bass with a beefy sounding kick drum so any suggestions on mic placement are welcome, as well as he plays with all Z custom 18" crashes and China and Zcustom hi hats. so pretty loud cymbal action..

thanks for the advice!

You might want to check into renting 2 small diaphragm condensor mic's for overheads instead of the 57, then use a 57 on snare and kick.

Mwarkentin is right. If you can get a condensor it will help for OH and for vocals.

Your plan sounds fine. You could try the 57's on snare and kick and the 58 as OH.

What is the EV mic?

well im not sure what the EV mic is. it has a good pick up, thats about all i know. the equipments out at the studio

well heres how i got it set up in pro tools

I think you kinda' got it a little backwards.

The drums should be tracked before anything else. It sounds like a good idea to record a scratch and play along with that, but the drummer should be the first to do so (unless you are using a click track, that is).

If you have to, just blair the guitar and bass on your scratch take.

well what i did was. just lined my guitarist right into the sound board. ran head phones out of his track to the drummer. recorded the drummers tracks on track 678. so now i have alll the drums recorded and were adding guitar bass and vocals this weekend

The shures are great for performance but you really need condenser mics. for price considerations there is nothing like the oktava conden. mics high quality at a great price

k well im gona mix and compress everything into protools this weekend and ill post an mp3 or 8 :) and see how it came out!
