In a moment of weakness this morning, I purchased a pair of ECM8000s from Zzounds. They just got shipped and should be here either Monday or Tuesday. I'm looking forward to using them on acoustic guitars. I already have a Soundelux U97, Neumann KM184, AT4033, Shure SM58, and a Great River MP2. Should be interesting to see how these cheap puppies (~$85 for the pair) stack up against my current collection. Have a great weekend everyone!

I was just about to make that move myself, But while traveling on buisness I ran across a pair of Crown PZMs for 15.00 at a pawn shop in Topeka KS. So now Ive got my overheads and I preferr to use a C1 on my L5 while also going throgh my DG stomp.

If I do run accross some of them Ill use them for field recording.

I think someone had just posted that Guitar Center had the ECM8000's for $29 a piece.....

Darrin,

a pair of PZM's for $15 and a pair of ns10's for $75?.....i need to start hitting the pawn shops again....the market seems like its getting favorable for some good deals.....

Just stay out of kansas and western mo. I dont need anyone picking over the Pawn shops here.

I suppose that they are ripe for the taking where ever you are. I work in the field so I stop at the pawn shops durring the day. the high end stereo shops are good too. yesterday I picked up an old reverb unit from the eighties for 15.00 and soon Ill get a noise reduction / compressor they are asking 35.00 now but they will probuly settle for 30.00.

Im going to need more wood to build more racks, Ive got 3 full now each 2' tall.

I got them!

Well they're sitting here in my studio, and I can't quite figure out how to get them into the clip. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yeah, is anybody else not impressed with the supplied mic clip? It took me a while to figure out what to do, and it still doesn't fit very well. Not to mention the unpleasant smell in them cases.

I think the clip is fine, very solid though hard to get on. The box is a cassette tape case...clever. Just remember, it's a 30 dollar microphone!

Mic cases

Home Despot is selling an aluminum roadcase-style tool box for $19 right now. I saw the same one at Walmart a month ago for $16. Just pull out the tool inserts, go to an upholstery shop and buy a block of foam, then use an electric steak knife to cut it to fit the roadcase and for sculpting the mic cut-outs. Separate mic cases are nice to have for shipping individual mics, but otherwise most folks store 'em and use a single roadcase. Tube mic / power supply cases usually stay separate though, they're space hogs. HTH

Returning to Gidge's comment a bit earlier about someone posting a $29 price sighting at Guitar Center...

I just returned from my local GC (where I was too late to see the Joe Meek VC1) and noticed an ECM8000 in the case. They had it marked at $79. I did not pursue the issue with the weasel, though I'm sure he was authorized to take $70.

Incidentally, I paid about $90 for this mic roughly two years ago at Brook Mays when I needed a measurement mic. Later, I stumbled onto it's value as a drum overhead, and took to micing the kit with just that, a snare and a kick mic. Look Ma, no phase switch!

Lemme know if anybody else has seen a low price at one of their local supermarkets.

Are you saying that $70 for the ECM8000 is a good deal? I don't follow.

I can't believe they're only $35!

Well, I'm a fan! Haven't done any critical recording yet, so these are my first thoughts.
-They seem really solidly built.
-I laugh everytime I take them out of their cassette case :D
-Tried them in X-Y through my Great River, recording my Taylor 512 and Martin D16. Sounded really good, I got quite a large sound out of them. Compared well with my Neumann KM184 (small-diaghram cardiod).
-Unfortunately picked up a lot of my PC noise...Was able to futz around with where in my room I set the mics up to minimize it somewhat.
-Tried Harvey's over-the-shoulder technique with hard strumming. Worked really well with my D16.

This weekend I'm going to try some vocal/guitar recordings with my new puppies, along with using my Soundelux U97 for vocals. Hopefully phase/bleed won't be too much of a problem! ;)
Another problem is my pre situation. I have two channels of Great River :) , and then two channels of an Aphex 107 :(
Anyone want to send me an extra high quality pre? :D

Slackmaster: No, that's just my point. I was appalled that they have the nerve to still charge that price. I was not seriously expecting to find a $29 tag on it at GC, either. I just thought they would have come down a little at least!

Hence my question: Can anyone confirm a lower price sighting (lower than $70, at least!) on the ECM8000's at their local GC? My suspicion is that the bricks-and-mortar boys aren't interested in this price war.

Guitar center guarantees the lowest price, so if you show them a printout from another dealer they will beat it. I have utilized this guarantee more than once. Talk to the store manager if you have to.

Ok whew, I thought you were thinking that 70 bucks was a good deal because you had previously bought one for 90. I would have hated to see you buy one at that price when you could've gotten two!

Oh no, far from it! And thanks for your concern, Slackmaster. No, if anything, I feel kinda scrood that I paid what I did given the recent reduction.

And while I don't disbelieve the prior poster, I myself have never seen my local (Dallas) GC offer to beat anybody's price. Maybe I haven't been paying attention. I tend to tune out their barrage of ads after a while. It's so rare that they offer anything I'd want, let alone at a price that beats the online guys.

At the time I got my ECM8000 from Brook Mays, the online price I found was around $80 before adding in shipping, I figured I may as well pick it up on the way home. Brook Mays at the time was the only place locally which carried most of the Behringer line. They, Brook Mays, have never felt the need to compete on price with anybody, since they cater to the school band market the way GC does to the garage band Fender/Marshall market.

from the prior poster

From the GC website:

"You're guaranteed the lowest price from Guitar Center. Period. If at any time within 30 days of your purchase from us, you find the identical item in stock and advertised by an authorized dealer at a price lower than what you paid, Guitar Center will fully protect you. Just bring in the ad - even if it's our own - along with your original Guitar Center receipt, and we'll gladly refund the difference."

This guarantee is nation-wide. You don't even have to buy first. Just show them the ad and they will beat it.

For whatever it's worth, I'm buying another pair of the Behringer ECM8000s tomorrow, so I'll see who's got em for $30 each.

Hey,
I bought 2 ecm8000's yesterday at GC ,and yes they are $29.99
I had to go to two diffrent locations to get them. I got the last one at the Chicago store and went to a suburb to get the second.
It was in a display case marked $80.00 and the guy gave me a funny look when it rang up $29.99. He didnt know where the case was so I tried to talk him down cheaper, then I saw it on a shelf behind the counter.
damn maybe I could have gotten it for 20.
