hey all i have been reading through alot of the threads and a coupla terms are completely foreign to me....1st..what the hell is a "reference c.d"?....2nd...in regards to mixing when someone says "nice stereo spread "..does that have something to do with panning or frequencies??....

A reference CD is just simply a CD of music you like; music that has a mix THAT IS SIMILAR to the mix you'd like to create. Usually a professionally mixed/mastered CD.

Someone else can cover stereo spread -- cuz to me that's just how "wide" (far apart) the left and right side of the stereo image is. (too simplistic)

reference CD

Yes, a reference CD is nothing more than a CD of music that you like and that is similar to what you're trying to create. When you're mixing down, patch a CD player into your system so that while you're mixing, you can momentarily alternate between listening to the reference Cd and listening to your own mix. Very helpful1

Actually, when people refer to a "nice stereo spread", it has to do with how well the instruments "sit" in the stereo field. When everything's panned to center, it's usually more difficult for the ears to hear the instruments individually.

whew...after that explanation on ref. c.d.......i figured stereo spread maent the typs of home stereo components you had scattered around the room...

that's the thing that sucks about Hip-Hop.

the tracks of so many Hip-Hop artists are produced by different people and are recorded at different studios that the production level and sound quality within a single CD varies by miles.

you can hear the difference between a Dr. Dre produced track verses a RockWilder produced track verses a Swizz Beats produced track within the first 2 bars of the song. Most hip-hop artists will have 3 or 4 different producers on a CD release.

In Rock it is much easier to have a reference CD because the entire CD will be produced by one person/team. and the entire album will be performed by one band.
