Hey just set up my bigger pair of speakers that are sorta retro and sound pretty good. I think they are decent to mix on. You guys tell me what you think with this smple piano and vocals mix. This was a hard vocal take to achieve eventually he just said ok lets just take thisw next one because im getting tired.
I hate that sense of despair trying to get that good take. I spent yesterday trying to get a good take and finally went with the first one...luckily I saved it and was just overwriting the second one over and over
Anyway - I digress - This is a great mix DAS. The piano has a great reverb to it - is that all room or an effect applied to the track? The vocal very smooth and even and separated nicely from the piano. Both instrument and vocal are great.....Extend my compliments to the performer/composer for a fine job....
The piano track reverb is all natural reverb but it mixes with the vocals effect reverb really good. Yeah the composer/performer is a very talented pianist/musician he plays multiple instruments and writes incredible music. He actually got most musically inclined in my school on account of he conducts all of the school plays and plays piano and sometimes bass in the jazz band. Very talented person thats for sure.
Nice recording of the piano - a little light on the bass end though.
You can't help the vocal performance if the bloke gives up.
There's a fair bit of ess'ing & similar going on. No explosives though.
Piano sound is a bit muffled, needs a hi end tweek to my ears, not crazy about the vocals. Good song idea for a stronger singer. Out of key on some spots.
Its light on the bass becuase I used two small capsule condensors. I could of put something at the bottom of my stand up to pick up the bass frequencies but I decided not to.
And I agree joey dego it is a great song for a better singer.

I just heard that muffled you are talking about I think I need to seperate some frequencies a little bit more. It was a free job I am not that worried I just was testing out micing my piano for the first time.
I don't like the piano or vocal from an engineering standpoint. I like the timbre of his vocals, but he needs practice for sure. It's easy to listen to because of the arrangement. That's probably why you think it's your best mix. I'm assuming you recorded vocals and piano at the same time right, it sounds like it? If so I definitely would have tried some things to get rid of bleed. It sounds like there's weird phase stuff. What was your mic placement like on the piano. Too much room sound going on, but maybe only because the room didn't sound that great? There's a crapload of noise too.

Using small diaphragms isn't going to wreak havoc on your bass response, it just won't sound quite as full as a large diaphragm in that area. Not a SUPER big difference most of the time. The muffling you're hearing is probably phase cancellation brought on by your piano mics not being placed optimally, or your piano mics picking up a lot of bleed from the vocals and the vocal mic picking up too much piano, but it could be a combination of all of those things. Also the noise.
