My AKG C3000 B is just...

... A complete waste of my time. I spent 150 british bloody pounds for this heap of junk that the guy in the store advised me was a briliant piece of equipment. I feel cheated... I can't actually describe what it is when I record, it just sounds bad... It's kinda muffled when singing low notes, and when I sing higher the sound is tinny, like almost digitalised?! The moment I decided to completely ditch this piece of junk was the other day when the shockmount snapped for no apparent reason... It has been fun. Not.

As you can see, I'm not down with the technical lingo, so I must apologise. I must also apologise for the following "what is the best mic" type question!

I want a mic that has almost like a rich, raw sound to it - like gritty and realistic... Haha, I sound like a rather crazy person. But do you guys know what I mean? My budget at the moment is kinda negotiable - like I'm willing to spend for something decent, so... I guess my voice is quite powerful, like I play around with soft and strong notes, and my genre is Nu-Jazz/Soul/Blues... So I'm just looking for a bloody good mic that will work well with me.

If it makes any difference to any suggestions I'm using the TASCAM US-144 as my audio interface and I'm recording in Cakewalk SONAR 5...

Absolutely any help appreciated!

almost too many options really.

looked at adk?

how about some of the cheeper ribbon mics?

better dynamics like the heil pr30 pr40, sure sm7b, ev re20

lots of ways you can go, but check all of thoes options out for starters.

see if you can get the guy to swap you for a 2000, much better mic and cheaper so he might be willing

Thanks for your suggestions.
Giraffe - I'm so glad you suggested the ElectroVoice RE20 - it's a Mic that I'd previously heard about, and I recently saw/heard the Mic in action with Amy Winehouse on YouTube - check it out. So it seems ideal - is ElectroVoice a reputable brand? Also, I just checked out the official website and they have an RE27 listed - check it out. Do you know anything about this mic?
Why is mic hunting such a task!!!

The problem is that Amy Winehouse could sing into the end of a cardboard toilet paper tube and sound great. But yes, the EV RE20 or the Shure SM7 are both good choices.

Thank you to everyone for your help. I guess now I have one ultimate question left to ask - will I notice a much improved sound with an EV RE20 or RE27, from my AKG C3000B?

Am I kidding as in, the AKG C3000B wipes the floor with the re20 or 27, or kidding as in, the AKG c3000B is nothing compared to the re20 or 27???

Sorry I'm just wanting a clear answer - this mic hunting thing is driving me a little nuts there are so many little details to look at...

The answer is yes, you will hear a huge difference and you will throw that AKG piece of crap right out the window.

ev is super reputable, and a lot of that rep is built on the re-20. (though most of the stuff they make is very good)
don't bother with the re-27, it's not quite as good sounding.(as the 20)
also, the re-20 will do anything, seriously. a good mic for voice, bass cab, horns, guitars, kick, the list goes on.

Okay my mind is set - thanks for everyone's advice. God, being impulsive can be such a bitch. :D

That thing really looks like a nice mic, as does the 4000, be thankful you didn't get one of those monsters

i've gt a 3000 and while it's not my goto mic for lotsa stuff it's usable IMO... anyhow re20's are great mics for all kindsa stuff.. the 27 is very similar but not exactlly the same although they claim the diff should basiclly be in the hotter output (neodynium magnet) and some feed back rejection...
