this is a song i just did, using the pod xt to record all the guitars and bass parts....

it's my first "song" with this thing....

i've been a tube purist for so long, i thought i needed to shake up my own tree.......;)

This is a short 3 minute rock tune, with vox and harmonies, but i'm not happy yet with the mix......expecially with the low end in general, and the mix level of the drums....
all ideas are appreciated.

i can re-mix, but cannot re-track....

it's done on a roland vs880ex, 16 tracks total... bounced down 5 different times...... !
what a bitch.
i need more tracks.....
;)

Another stranger from my hometown :)

Where have all the guitar heroes gone? Here

Hey, your singing is better than your last one (Take it All)...

Good arrangement... vocs are mixed too low... bass is fighting the guitar and
body of the vocals (between 250-500Hz)... drums are a bit low, too... hard
panned guitars sound good... you've got great tone. Bass should have more
low energy, and less low-mid energy... kick drum is barely there, too...
the beater is barely registering.

Nice harmonies!!! TripleM will stamp your forehead with a star.

Good, poppy progression... here come da leads at 2:05.... not the "Queen" tone
you had before, but still good.

You could have soloed all over this mother, and showed restraint... but almost
too much? C'mon, man... a guy with as much "wankability" in his guitar-playin
hand should have gone off more here :)

Great song!!

the icebreaker - participant!

thanks for breaking the ice, chad!

yeah, the wanking, the wanking.....
no, i actually recorded a bunch of solos, and then while mixing, i realized i didn't need any of it.... just that little bit........i really wanted to concentrate on the vocal side, and the rhythm side.

on my monitors, the kick drum is the loudest thing in the mix... when i stand in the corner of my "soundtrap" room!
LOL

so, this low mid energy thing is going to be the hardest thing for me to come to grips with.......
i pushed the bass around 400 hz, just to get the roundness to come out, and it blends well (again, through the monitors) with the kick and guitars.... so, my monitors must be giving me info that is not correct, or my room is just f*cked! (krk rokits).......

so, maybe i need to find some "click" eq on the kick (hard to do with a simple stereo-out drum machine that you cannot tweak).....
and get rid of the 400hz push on the bass, to let the vox sit better.....

good review, this was exactly the kind of info i need......

harmonies were fun!

that solo, that little bitty short solo (LOL) was the tube amp model (not based on anything) with a fuzz face model in (virtual) front of it, through a gibson goldtone 10" cabinet model, miced with a sm57 on axis, and about 45% room effect....

thanks for participating.

freaky... this might actually convince me to get a pod. i've never heard a sound that i really liked, but at least your tone convinced me that there are some good sounds to be had.

i loved the song...

the bass sound.... it's way too rickenbacker for my taste... but that's just me. i'm a p-bass or stingray guy when it comes to rock. give me the grindy grungy bass... however in the context of this song that sound might not work.

1:52 - the effect there... sounds like vocals going through a vocoder or something... very tasty.

i thought the vocals sounded great, just the right volume.

Great pop song. I didn't think the lyrics were all that great. But the music was very very good. I liked the feel. The playing and singing were terrific. Harmonies - nailed. A real toe tapper. If this came on the car radio I'd turn it up.

I thought participant's comments regarding possible improvements were spot-on.

I loved it.

Try pushing at 120Hz instead. That should help and keep it out of those low mids.

Nice song. Very interesting sound/feel. Harmonies were very nice. I think they really contributed to that cool feel.

Guitars sounded great too.

Good song. Nice work.

thanks a lot for all the comments.....

you guys listen!

volthouse-
i'll be posting a more intense, darker sounding mp3 soon.... probably a lot more progressive than this (my most pop-like tune)..... and i'll use the PODXT exclusively on that as well........ so maybe that'll help you even more.... i've got some wicked high gain sounds going on now, just haven't written anything that showcases that sound yet....
the bass is a Series 10 pbass knockoff....... with emgs...... i just can't get the sound i really want out of it..... so when i can, a new bass is in order. and that should help probably more than anything!
that vocal effect was a rotary effect, but with one speed on the low end, and another at the high end...... and 4 vocal parts.....

TripleM-
thanks for the comments as well..... the lyric, well, it was partly inspired by a death of a friend, and the idea of him getting to a place and feeling good about it, not wary or scared, and then later of me getting to the same place..... and meeting him again, and knowing that everything's cool.... with a little tree skiing imagery thrown in!
i know the gist of it, with the happy go lucky melody makes it seem a little light hearted, but it isn't..... it just sounds that way!
LOL
I guess i just had to get that one out of my system!
back to hard liquor now.........

skids-
you know, that's totally how i had the bass at first..... rolled off at 3khz and above, flat all the way down to 120hz, then boosted about 2db with a Q of 1.0..........
and it just didn't sound right..... so i figured, i'll cut some 400hz out of the kick drum, and boost the bass there, to get some "meat" into the sound.... and it apparently just backfired on me!
boils down to knowing your monitors, or not.....
i've been a/b'ing my mixes with STP's Shangri-La Dee Da cd.........
so, i still got closer than i really thought i would.....

ok, back to work..... i'll repost with the changes......
thanks again.

The guitars sound very 'pro-studio'.

I can understand all of the words to the vocal on the first listen.

'journey' ... ;-)

Backup vocals are very nicely done.

Overall I would like to hear more midrange on the vocal to make it a bit punchier. And the harmony vocals near 2:10, just after that, compare how loud the guitar is at 2:18 compared to that.

I think the vocals can be much, much louder, they are effective where they are, but if you bring the lead up, you can then let the backups come up also.

What's more important here, what should be 'loudest' ... the guitars or the vocals ? Everything is clean enough and has enough seperation through stereo field placement and general EQ that that is really the question.

I personally think the vocal lead could easily come up 3db, and I think you should be 'blasting our hair back' with backup vocals of this quality ...

Man that rocks!!

If anyone deserves a new Pod, that would be you.

You will now become the PodXT answer man.

I can't criticize this, it just sounds fantastic!!

I think participant, has got hyper hearing, and is very helpfull, listen to him!!

It's late so I'm on phones...sorry!

I was hoping to hear the Boogie you posted a shot of in the the G&B forum.

Oh well...this sounds great! Some awesome vocals! Defintely got a great 70's vibe overall, complete with GREAT harmonies!

Impressive!

It's downloading, I can't stream it. Make it so we can stream it next time, eh? It's playing now, The guitars sound good, so do the bass and drums. Vocals are pretty good to. Nice.

cool comments, everyone...thanks!!

studioviols
i appreciate the nice comments on the vocals. i originally mixed this to showcase the guitars and bass, cuz i'm using my new toy (pod xt) and i wanted to see how it went through it's paces...
i think your ideas about eq'ing on the voiced is good...i'll experiment with some eq'ing there, to see what i can pull out...
blasting your hair back....LOL

gt-
i don't think i'm the one for the podXT answer man... i'm just getting started with this machine....much to learn.... but thanks for the comp....

sluice
yeah, i've got older stuff done with the boogie all over my links... some are straight boogie, and some use the boogie as a power amp with a marshall jmp-1 in the effects loop....
so, this is all pod direct... and i'll do some heavy stuff this weekend, try out the more high gain stuff....
it'll be different, for sure.

FattMusiek
thanks for checking it out... i think i fucked up when i set up that song, meant to stream it as well..... i'll do that next time....

thanks everyone, for all comments

Uh, oh...

Okay, now my own meager post to this forum seems... well, weak by comparison. :D

Excellent job... the song is basic rockpop, almost encroaching on the J-Pop feel (which I like). Didn't listen closely to the lyrics, as I usually don't listen closely to the lyrics, but the levels seemed fine.

Bright, well-defined, crisp-sounding tracks. An all-around good job. Keep it up!

P.S. - One minor suggestion... you may want to clip the beginning of the file a bit... had a moment when I wondered if the file worked. Leave about 1 second max of silence.

Very coincidental. I'm working on a tune right now that I wrote about the suicide of a boyhood friend. I've got it tracked and it sounds too "happy." Everything I did to make it sound sad just made it sound that much happier.

It'll be posted in a couple of weeks probably. Pretty strange.

Just read participant's post. He knows me well doesn't he?

Props to the locals!!!! This IS the place!

Sounds great. That definitely sounds like the POD. I only know that because of my GC experience last week.

Great vocals. Loved the harmonies.
How do you like the XT compared to the 2.x?

a short high energy rock song, with lots of vocal harmonies....
a trip into existential space.......
a look at the afterlife.....
when you meet up with a friend....
or could just be about tree skiing

What about an afterlife experience while laying in the snow after hitting a tree?

tree skiing = sonny bono....

;)

HomeRec-
j-pop...... you must enlighten me as to this j-pop........ LOL
i didn't realize that there was excess time at the beginning of the clip.... thanks for letting me know...the roland software that burns to redbook format automatically crams 2-5 seconds of silence in front of the tracks on certain types of burns... and i didn't even know!
thanks... glad you liked it.......

TripleM-
yeah, it is coincidence.... this lyric was for a friend of mine that rolled his truck up in American Fork canyon, and tried to get out, didn't make it...
such a young guy, bright future ahead... and boom.
i'll listen when you post....

JR#97-
pod, yes, podXt, not to be confused with......;)
i never used the original pod, so i can't comment on how they compare...
you can read comments at the line 6 forums, they talk about all that kind of stuff....

i do like this pod though. they have an update to the flash memory, newer models on a couple of amps, newer cab and mic models, but i haven't updated yet....

good song, nice vocals! participant covered the mix and I totally agree.. I found that bass frequency to be quite distracting.. it killed the bass drum and everything else in it's path.. maybe my speakers accented it even more, but that bass was stepping on everything.. badly..

good song and vocals..

sabbath-thanks for checking it out,man....

this bass thing, i gotta nail......
now i know some good places to look/start.....

the moral of the story here is, learn low end on low end-shy systems..........
or buy a better monitor!

LOL

i didn't spend time this weekend working on this mix again......

i got inspired to write a "Heavy" tune........

so i'll post that one here soon, before i re-post the remix of this "where i want to go" song......

here's a sneak peak at the lyric for the new one........
