my 1820m

I just upgraded my DAW interface/soundcard from (2) Aardvaark Q10 units, to one EMU 1820m paired w/ a Behringer ADA-800. Mind you, I have only used this setup for about 12hrs of mixing, 50+ hrs of reference listening, and 12 hrs of bass/vox tracking; but I gotta say that this setup is amazing! Installation and setup was easy, and I haven’t had a single glitch yet. The sound of the converters/clock vs. the Aardvark, is that the EMU is much clearer in the top-end and dynamic overall. The difference is beyond noticeable (to me). Listening to Pink Floyd’s “animals” on CD through the EMU’s D/A’s sounded so much like vinyl it made me get the shivers. Mixes in progress suddenly got sorted out immediately on the new system. Pres are very detailed and natural thus far and the DSP fx are going to be extremely useful to me I can tell….Sorry for gloating, just super happy that this is working out! Now waiting for my preamps to arrive in the mail soon…..

BTW specs are: SONAR 3.1.1/ABIT NF7s/AMD-XP1.8GHz(single32-bit)/many HDs
 
i've thought about this upgrade from my terratec. how is the behringer getting along with it? are you using slaving it to the emu? gloat more, brotha!
 
I am still to scaried to buy one. The driver issues needs to be sorted out before I even theink about.
 
i've never put much thought into the wdm driver problems, i use asio with my current system and problably would continue to if i upgraded my card. which are you using, paranoid?
 
Hey, that's interesting! But there's one thing I don;t understand: doesn't the EMU 1820m already have A/D converters? What's the purpose of the ADA800?? Do you use the optical lightpipe outs on the ADA800 to feed the EMU sound card?
 
it'd just give you an extra 8 inputs for drums, synth, etc...

I have always used WDM drivers and I know E-mu has bad ones.

Do you KNOW this empirically, or is this just 3rd party anecdotal? On what do you base this statement?

When you visit any forum, generally the s/n is very low, with a lot of (understandable) bitching about how this and that "doesn't work for ME" going on. It is MUCH rarer to hear "it works for me, I am happy", because these people probably would rather be playing with their instrument than reading and writing about it in a forum, and when you do, it is most often "it NOW works for me".

I have used BOTH the asio and wdw drivers with my 1820m, and have not noticed a significant difference.

Glad you are happy with this beast, as I am I. I am using Sonar 4.0, btw. Have fun!

I only use it with ASIO. Still no glitches... Bouncing down some final mixes on the the DAW (not this computer) as i type. The Behringer adds 8 additional inputs via ADAT optical cable. I actually haven't hooked up the behringer yet...I'll let y'all know when i do and keep it updated! :D

The are always exception to everything, but after reading hundreds upon hundreds of review you start to get a feel for a product. Espically when these reviews stay constant across diffrent forums.
 
I've been posting positive reviews of the Layla3G around forums on the web -- I've had it for a few months and logged a number of hours. I do this only because there isn't much info out there yet. Anyhoo, when I bought the Layla, it was a choice between that and the EMU. I must say, I'm glad to learn both units are working great for people, because we can all record more shit and spend less time spitting blood at a computer monitor.
 
What have you 1820M users got your latency down to? What bit depth are you recording at? Have you recorded multiple inputs at once, if so how many?
