Any comments on the Marshall Electronics MXL2001/MXL603S Combo Pack? How does the MXL2001 compare to the Rode NT1? And is the MXL603S a good choice for recording acoustic guitar? I'm trying to record a Gibson with a big bass sound using an A-T MB4000C. When I back the mic off enough to moderate the bass response I get too much room noise and loose the presence.

I liked the 603s on my dreadnaught Larrivee (cedar top). It has a fairly wide cardiod pattern. It is going to have a proximity effect if you get it too close to the soundhole of your Gibson. The Behringer ECM 8000 ($35) omni might do a good job on your guitar because it gets the low end without the bass boom.

I recently purchased both the 603s ($79) and the ECM 8000. I recorded in stereo with the 603s pointed down from about 6" above the 9th fret and the ECM 8000 pointing down from about 6" above the bridge. I was very pleased with the result (at a cost of only $115).

I hear the 2001 is pretty bad, but the last issue of Tape Op had a Royer tube mod that looks very interesting.

Thank you, tdukex. Exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

I have the 2001p and I dont like it at all. When I bought it I thought it sounded crisp but the more I listened to it the harsher it seems.A good mic to AVOID.Ive heard good things about other Marshal mics so I think it might just be the 2001p that sucks.

Scott Dorsey has a mod that I think only costs you about $20. It replaces all internal compnonents except the diapragm, but it doesnt look very easy, but easier than the Royer. I'm not an electronics guy, though.
I have $60 for your 2001.
