I was wondering if anyone has used this mic. It costs 150 and comes with shock mount. Has 3 micron thick diaphram. v67 has a 1 micron thick. Do you think this mic would sound better than the v67?? I have been pondering it for a while and just wanted to know what you guys think. I am going to be able to get a pre and a LD condensor in about 2 weeks when the funds come through. I am just looking at new possibilities. Oh yeah and this thing has a bass rolloff and -10db pad.

After more digging it seems as if this mic is very similar to the MXL2003. Hmmm...

According to Wayne at Marshall Electronics, the V93M IS the same thing as the 2003. In fact, he went as far to say that he feels it is the best mic they make.

I don't have that e-mail right in front of me because it is on my work e-mail account but would be happy to post it for you if interested.

The V67 seems to get a bigger thumbs up

Marshall MXL-2003 $399 I thought the 2003 sounded pretty smooth overall. Alex thought it had a little less bottom than the 103, but a little more hi mids and top end than a 103. The Nady had a little less bottom. Alex felt it was similar to the AKG C3000, but it sounded smoother than a C3000, to me anyway.

Marshall MXL-V67 $270 This was the other flat-out winner, both in the looks, and sound categories. It's the green-bodied, gold topped Bejing 797 copy of a C12, and it looks like it costs around $2500. Lots of proximity effect (even more than my RCA ribbon mics) and about 1.5 dB more bottom than the TLM-103, with a similar top end to the TLM-103. This is a real winner for some male vocals, especially singers that make use of the proximity effect. It compared very favorably with the LOMO M3 head for that "bigger than life" sound. If you wanna make your studio "look" more expensive than it really is, get the V67. And it just happens to sound great, too.

His son compared it to a AKG C3000. That's not a good thing. ;)

I think the main difference between the V67 and the other Marshalls is the transformer. The only other transformer-balanced Marshalls are the tube mics.

v67 has a 1 micron thick.

That would be 6 microns.

Thanks guys...I guess I know what my next microphone purchase will be then

Here's the quote from Wayne at MXL. Not rocket science, obviously, but an inside opinion from Marshall:
Check the frequency response curve on the 2002 on http://www.mxlmics.com it's flat out to almost 25k and is dead quiet. It's the best mic we make.
Wayne
After this e-mail, I aksed him what is the +/- tolerance of their graphs. I have yet to receive an answer

Anyway, the good news is the pricing Mars has on this mic right now. As Beezoboy pointed out, the mic with shockmount is only $149:

You guys are killing me!

Option anxiety. Is this a better deal than the V67, then? It seems like it. Especially when you throw in the shock mount. But is it a better mic (for vocals especially)?

For what it's worth, the V76M is only about $129 right now. If you add the shockmount, which can be had for about $30, your pretty close to breaking even. In fact, I bought 2 V67Ms at my local Mars :D

I looked at it this way, the V67 is proven on this board. I don't think anyone has posted anything yet done with the V93. That's not to say it is a bad mic! If you read Harvey's review of the Marshall line he had good things to say about the 2003 which, according to that guy at MXL, is the same as a V93.

So, the truth is, you'll probably be fine with either one!

My local Mars is closing for good and they have a no return policy on anything bought right now. So, I had to go with something that's somewhat "known".

Know what I mean?

Peace,

All of the Mars's stores in So.Cal. are closing too. What is going on?

I've got 3 Guitar Centers and one Mars within an hour from my house (Boston area) and I'm gonna start using them to demo stuff ONLY as online places usually have what I'm looking for and will usually price match and deliver quickly (thank you 8th St.). But the main reason is the fact that boards like this actually give me ANSWERS. My local GC is staffed with people who have not used most of what I'm looking for or can't answer questions they should be able to ("Can I put a Delta 66 in the same pc as a 1010 and use them both?" "Is firewire better for a Mac than a PC?" etc.) Today I'm probably going to go to the local Mars and compare the V93M with the V67. Maybe I can find out if they're closing up shop...

Hey Chuck,

Here in the Phoenix area, its GC and everybody else! However, they will price match with anyone. That's why I bought my Delta 1010 locally. Paid for it at the counter and an hour and a half later, its up and running at home. With that said, I still purchase most of my stuff on-line...the selection is so much better! Let's know what you think of the VM93 vs V67. Have fun!

Ok I am buying my v93 on Monday if all goes well. Since I have a Mars about 3 hours away I'll recieve probably the next day. If I am lucky I might be able to get a couple acoustic guitar comparisons of the V93, an AKG C3000B, ECM8000's and maybe even a Sennheiser MD441 U. That would be pretty ambitious seeing as I can't even play guitar (I am a drummer). I am really excited though. I'll try and keep you guys posted.

Sorry for the deviation. I'm gonna go to Mars, but first...

Lavoz,
Not to change the subject, but I never made it to Mars today, however, I did pick up a Delta-1010 ($400 new in the box from a guy that bought two - hehe). What driver did you load? The one that came with it or a download?

Chuck,

I'm glad you were able to get the unit for that price...well worth it! I'm using the driver from the CD that came with it for Win2000. Its been working. so I see no need for change, right now. Good luck with it, and let us know how it goes.

It's such a shame. Mars goes through the trouble and expense setting things up so their products can be demo'ed, and people just go and buy online. I'm not saying that I wouldn't do it, but it is a shame. I guess it is their fault, though, for not educating their sales staff better. If people actually felt they could get just as good or better advice at Mars or GT, then maybe they wouldn't be losing business and closing shop.

I'm gonna apologize in advance because...

I realize we're getting a bit off the thread here...

In fairness to Mars, I've shopped there only a handful of times as GC is closer. It's possible that their (Mars) personnel are a bit more "up" on things. But look at us, here on these boards. We don't make our living (not all of us anyway), spend 40 hours a week or more with these products, but I'm willing to bet that the more knowledgable 10% here (and I doubt I'm one of those) can do a better job, while at the same time work 50-plus hours a week, raise a family and make music (I am one of those).
That being said, I'd like to think I'd pay an extra 10% or so for good service, but maybe price is the bottom line. Clearly this is what the superstores think.

Well I hate to be a Mars basher but I once drove 3 hours to return an internet purchase and was told to go to another store. I had talked to the manager on the phone and made sure to get his name, schedule, and last known address before I went there. Seeing as his store was another 50 miles out of the way I went to another store that was closer. All mars stores *should* be able to do returns, BUT this Mars told me that I would have to drive the extra 50 miles to return it at the other store because they COULDN'T do any internet returns. I was so pissed I vowed never to do buisiness with them again. But then I got to the other store and got some of the very best service I have ever recieved, and a handjob. Ok no handjob. So I think the moral of this story is to find a DEALER/REP you trust. It doesn't matter if it is JoeScmoes Music or Mars. If you get a dealer/rep that is willing to work with you, stick with them, because when you have a bad purchase or a messed up order, they will make it right.

Just to get back on the subject...Beezoboy, let us know how your mic purchase goes. Are you going to compare the V93 with the V67? Also, I got a pair of ECM-8000's for drum overheads. (2 days mail order from 8th St. because the local GC was out and the sales person didn't even think to call one of the other local GC's for an inventory check until I asked.)

As for the 8000's: I've done one take with them so far as drum overheads. I need to spread them out (Harvey says 6 ft apart & 18" from the cymbals) as I didn't get a whole lot of separation due to their being omni. I did like their high end response though. Note too self: Record levels should not be too hot next time.
