Hi guys,

I m just starting out some recording at a home studio...
I just bought the MXL Cr30 condenser but then had second thoughts about it after hearing how bright the recordings turned out.

The Cr30 is a continuation of the mxl Blackwidow (black chrome) line that got discontinued it seems and it's marketed as a ultility microphone and it has a small body size.

Then I went to search for more mics and then MXL V67G came to mind.
Noting that the V67 series are marketed as vocal mics

How do these mics go up against each other?
I only strictly need a mic for vocal recording and I m not too sure to keep the Cr30 so I can get the V67G which is intended as a condenser for vocals.

Would appreciate if anyone can share their experience on whether a mic for a specific purpose is good? Or if they are actually all the same and all just marketing BS?? Should I keep the Cr30? or grab a v67g instead!?

Thanks for reading!

Hey man, welcome to the boards. As to whether the V67g would be better than the Cr30 on vocals is hard to gauge. I've only heard a few bits with the V67g and i've never heard/used the Cr30 (or the black widow when it was about). Looking purely at the frequency responses on the mxl website the V67g looks slightly less bright in comparison, in so much as it doesn't have the peak around 4kHz that the Cr30 has, but it still lifts slightly in the high end, and at the end of the day ever these plots have to be taken with a pinch of salt as they are still essentially marketing material. However, if you find the Cr30 too bright, the V67g may well be worth a go. It may also be worth looking at the cheaper sE Mics (sE X1 and sE2200a) as they have a much smoother high end imo.

As to whether it's worth having a mic for a particular purpose is a good idea, i'd very much say yes! We would all love to be able to just buy one mic and have it sound great on all things but because of different rooms, different instruments, different players etc etc it's often the case that we need a selection of mics to capture these different sounds. It's even worth having a collection of different mics just for different vocals as what may sound too bright on your voice may sound perfect on someone else, whereas what sounds great on your voice may sound wooly or muddy on someone else's voice.

Thanks so much justsomeguy for replying to me!!

Well I am also puzzled cause in this case, it seems that the price almost doesn't matter
Cr30 retails for about 199USD (so i simply assumed this might be a better performing mic)

while the V67g retails around 99USD (though it doesn't come with a shockmount and flight case like the Cr30)
Did the additional costs on the Cr30 come from the metal chrome, flight case and shockmount?

Looks like I must get a V67 and test it out real quick

I believe not a single company gives out free metal chrome, flight case and shockmount all at a go. Also, IMO, microphones that costs less than $250 isn't fit to be called a good performing microphone, unless you're going for those decent recordings. Also, the CR30 might be priced differently due to the microphone's specifications varying. I wouldn't say better, but a different sound.

It can be tough at times.
Especially in your case xixofox. Just recording vocals can be the equivalent to hitting the solo button on any track (can sound down right nasty at times).

The brightness that you speak of when recording a vocal track may be just perfect for that track to sit just right within a busy project where as if it wasn't as bright would seem dull, muddy and lifeless next to everything else going on.

So I guess the next question is once you have these vocal track what do you plan to do with them as a project?

BTW ... My V67's are great for what I use them for.
