Taking the slow road
I have used the MXL V67 for a while and it's been the mic hooked up to my ART Tube MP Studio V3.
Lately, I've been trying to test and use other mics in the v3 preamp.
I thought that the preamp was dying or that maybe the tube was going, b/c the glow is waaay down low now....
And I've been getting a rushing hiss when raising up the dials.
Then today, I thought that maybe the other mics aren't the noisy culprit. Maybe they are just lower sensitivity and I've been hearing the noise of the preamp b/c I've had to boost the levels a lot and boosting the levels raises the internal noise in the pre. So I put the V67 back on it and I didn't need as high as level as the ECM8000, the sm57, or the Realistic PZM - i dug that one out b/c Mick Glossop mentioned it in the book I'm still reading...
So what happend is that there was almost no noise b/c I didn't have to turn up the pre as far, w/ the v67.
It looks like I've been lucky and the v67 has a higher output and is a darn good mic and the only way I've been able to get away with using the Art pre is b/c of the high quality output level of the mic.
Is this making sense?
I'm planning to get another pre, one w/ dual channels and I have to say, I still like the cheapo tube gimmick, b/c I like to have a bit of soft distortion at the top since I have a limited setup it adds a bit of character is a low-fi way. And I also like the option of the clean solid state that's also in it. I'll be going to some flea market looking for old tube amps too, but in the mean time, I need a dual phantom pre amp and there's about 3 or so I can think of, but from this experience, it ain't gonna be the Art dually.
