I'm looking for a solid condenser mic for male vocals. (baritone) I also need it to stay around $100, unless a more expensive mic is that much better. Thanks for any and all recomendations.

go into a music store if you can and demo a few mics... you might like something once you play around with it, check into the AT2020 i hear great stuff about it.

the 67 sounds good from what i have heard out of it though, you may find something else you like better....

v67, and studio projects b1 are the ones i hear most good things about in the 100 dollar range. for 200 studio projects c1, or rode nt1a.

i got a studio projects b1, and it works great for my voice so far .. much better than my sm58 and free mxl 990 for recording. i sing deep , high, smooth, nasaly, loud, soft, metal, ballads, anything...it seems to work well for all, and brings out the details in softer more intimate vocals, really makes deep vocals sound full and present unlike the sm58....doesnt overdo the highs like the mxl 990 did. i've never tried the v67.. but the b-1 does everything i wanted it to and more for only 100 bucks.

one VERY small gripe though...it comes with a free foam windscreen, yet in the manual it says "we reccomend NOT using a foam windscreen, it might change the natural sound" , i thought this was kind of funny.

Musician's Friend gave me an MXL63 as a freebie/bonus for spending too much money with them last year  . I gave the mic away to one of the kids in my son's Jr. High rock band. If you're on a tight budget, I guess it's better than nothing but I just didn't care for it. It could be that I've got a bunch of better choices too and I've become something of a snob...I donno. I have tried out the 67 and think it to be a better over-all mic. I haven't used a B-1 but I've heard a lot of good things bout them.

v67g

I have a baritone voice and wasn't real satisfied with anything I tried until I got a v67g. It suited my voice just fine. It is a little on the "colored" side but not muddy or too dark. I'm sure the SP B1 must be good too. I've rarely, if ever read negative comments about it.

I was helping a baritone friend with a recording a few months back. He didn't know why, but he was getting a very shrill, exagerated high range. When I asked him what he was recording with, he told me he was using an mxl990 through a behringer mixer. That was I'll I needed to know. Stay away from the MXL 990 for vocals. I actually like the mic for some things though... (Cello and guitar cabs).

I haven't a chance to use a v67 yet, though I definetly want to because it is highly recomended for vocals around here. However, I do own a V63m, and I prefer it more on baritone vocals than my AT3035.

If you don't have a music store with some decent mics around you( I don't), order from a website with a liberal return policy or a satisfaction gaurantee. This way, if you get a mic you don't like, you can exchange it. Just make sure you read the fine print (a few sites out there don't accept returns on mics.)
