A friend of mine owns the MXL V63M, and I own 2 CAD GXL2200's. So you know these are my first experiences with condenser mics, and we've both had these mics for less than a month. So my frame of reference is small.
I use the CAD's mainly for drum overheads, where they excell compared to 2 Shure PG57's I formerly used for that purpose. With the CAD's, the cymbals sound much more lively with great high end, yet the toms arn't getting lost at all. For a complete drum setup, I have the gxl2200's overhead, and stick a PG57 on the snare where it's at home more than overhead. My kick mic is
the CAD KBM412. Overall, I hear a good balance between all the parts of the drum kit from using this four mic setup.
However, I've only tried my friend's MXL V63M for like 2 minutes , so I can't say if it's better than the GXL2200 or not. But I can safely say that both of these are more versatile and way better than something like a PG57 for just about any acoustic instrument. I also plan on using my GXL's for trombone, vocals, and acoustic guitar. Thanks for asking, and hope this helps.
