My friend just gave me an MXL condenser mic that doesn't work. I've heard there are some mods for this where you rip out the guts and start anew, trying to recreate a U87. Where can I find resources about this? Thanks!

There's also some schematics where you rip apart a Behringer mixer and rebuild it into a Neve console.

Nice Sarcastic reply there PDumDum. Another useless comment.
Your website blows BTW.
Get a life and when you do maybe you will be able to answer simple questions maturely and realize to keep your sarcastic comments to yourself.

dude, you aint gonna turn a MXL into a Neumann, no way, but you can do some mods to it to improve the sound a bit.

the thing you are probably referring to is the MOjave audio kit, which turns the condensor into a vacuum tube. However, Mojave is making their own mics now, and have quit selling the kits.

If you want a Neumann, buy a neumann. MXL aint gonna sound like one, ever, and any one who says so is telling untruths. I will look and see if I can find the threads..

You don't really havew to go the extra mile to make this into a U87. It already is................Better than a U87. After all, Neuman just buys MXL mics and re-badges them to say "U87"

Neuman mics are made in China now anyway.

I have some news for you, on many applications the MXL V77S sounds even better than a Neumann TLM103.

To my ears, the V76 is as close as it gets to the TLM 103, but like the V77, the bass is not there and it does not have the warmt and smoothness in the higher register. I still prefer the TLM 103 over both of these mics, especially when I hear how recorded tracks sit nicely in the mix.

Regards.

Despite what the article says, you are not going to come even 10% of the way to a Neumann sound with that capsule.
If you want a Neumann clone, you need a Neumann capsule (generally over $1000). Their capsules are nearly 100% of their sound.
And good luck ever finding an M7.

You will improve it a little bit with this mod, but only a little bit. The key roadblock of every Chinese mic is in the capsule.

If I were you I would just build a G7 with Peluso capsule out of it. Then you are actually going somewhere.

First of all, who said anything about a tlm 103???(wasnt this about MXL and u47/u87??did someone mention tlm103??? im lost) second of all when did I say it sounded better??quit jumping to conclusions.

I dont particularly care for the new neumann stuff either, as I am basically an MG only guy. I even bragged about one of the MXL mics(1006) in a post of mine.

I simply said it wasnt going to sound like a neumann. just like a neumann aint gonna sound like an mxl, AKG aint gonna sound like BLUE and Schoeps aint gonna sound like EAR.....Just relax, quit jumping to conclusions and breathe :) .
Trust me, you dont have to read anything into what I say, I speak my mind in very plain, concise terms.
I prefer the U89 anyway, and not a stock u89 either. My pair is going to SPAudio for modification.
I will tell you this though..The u87 is a very versatile mic, and will get the job done on more applications than any other microphone around. There is a reason many many engineers use them and so many albums have been made with them.

Although sarcastic and un-called for, pdadda's comment made me laugh.

Neumann mics are great, even the new stuff is great. I was at AES a couple of years ago and in the Neumann boot were an M149 and a TLM103 next to each other, connected to a pre and both were sent to a Sennheiser HD600 headphone.

It was then when I got to dislike the TLM103 and love the M149.

But........the MXL V77S is a really nice sounding mic, for those who can't afford the M149, the V77S comes close.

No worries man, :)
I rarely get angry. I was just busting your chops a little. If people want the REAL Neumann sound they should buy MG products, as MG still makes mics according toOld MR. Neumanns specs. Sennheiser owns the neumann name now, and other than the tlm170, u89(same capsule) and u87...I dont care for any of their stuff. MG has much better products.

for some insight into the history of Gefell and Neumann, look here:

http://www.gefell-mics.com/gefell_history_1.htm

I forgot to mention that the MXL I have doesn't work for more than 4 seconds, so it is prertty much shot on the inside. Just looking for a project and wanted to see if it was possible. Thanks for the info

i think you pretty much gut it with the DIY project I showed you, ...so the fact that it doesnt work isnt really an issue.

This is like saying if you want the Gibson sound, you should buy a Heritage guitar, b/c they're made at the old Gibson plant by 80 year old (and up) employees, who aren't even involved in the manufacturing process.

More rubbish that's based on your subjective opinion. The fact of the matter is that Sennheiser/Neumann controls the successful patents - not MG.

actually, sometimes it's true.

if you want a good fender, you have to buy a G&L.

Who cares who controls the patents??I say now and forever will I say that MG has better products overall. I dont care if you like or if you dont. Of course it is my opinion! I cant very well speak for someone else now, can i?FACT The Gefell mics are still manufactured using the original techniques of Georg Neumann. You say that they control the patents...who asked about patents???I said MG makes better products. That is my opinion. Call it whatever names you choose..it wont change. (I personally dont enjoy trashing other people and calling names.., but thats just me...). I will still say MG makes better microphones these days(since the sennheiser acquisition). Relax,Quit taking things so personally and being so damned reactionary. Opinions are opinions...Who cares? Does this impact your day so much, that you felt the need to jump on my post and make attacks??("rubbish"??) Oh well, do your thing man.
Off to bed, early day here in Germany tommorow.

So what, they aren't producing the U87s, M149s, TLM170s and other successful Neumann products.

That's right I said MG makes better products.

That's your opinion. My experience with Neumann products have time and again proven otherwise.

Telling you that you're talking rubbish isn't name calling.

It seems to me that you're projecting your own feelings on the subject. If you don't care, then you would not have responded.

Oh yes, the perceived attacks.
