i have noticed some people saying some good things about the Mxl mics and was wondering between the v57m, 990, v63m which would be a better purchase? I am just looking for a all around condenser mic to purchase with 1 or 2 shure sm57s. Also I have heard quite a bit about studio products mics and was wondering where the best place to purchase them was?

between those i rather the 990.....even more versatile would be the v67 (to me).......

I'm pretty sure the v57 and the v63 are the same mic in a different casing.

We've just had a long thread that seems to indicate that the V57M is a little different than everything else but close to a 2001 in the body of a V67. Or maybe it is a 1006.

The V63 I am fairly confident is the same as the 1006 as the specs are the same and both come in battery and phantom powered versions and are the only MXL mics to do so.

The 990 is a little different than the others. It is a small diameter condenser in a side-address casing. Electrically it is similar to the well regarded 603, but like all small diameter condensers its reputation is for being pushed hard on instrumentals rather than vocal.

At the price that it is being sold at the V57M is undoubtedly a bargain, but nearly everybody seems to have a MXL mic that they actually like better even if it costs more. Some folks really prefer the V67 and others really prefer the 2003, also known as V93M.

The 990 is basically the 603?????

If this is the case, is there a difference in sound due to the different casing??

I'm assuming there would be.

I've been considering getting a pair of 603's.
Would I be just as well off to get a pair of the 990's........although considering buying anything from MF kind of makes me nervous.

Well saying that they are identical is inaccurate. They both use the 20mm diaphram but MXL describes the one as 'cardoid' and the other as 'wide cardoid'. The 603 is described as having a broader frequency reponse (but their frequency response charts are identical). The 603 is described as havin a 'transformerless design' and the 990 id described as having 'A high quality FET preamp'. Also the MXL site describes their intended purposes as different.
