Has anyone Used an MXL for overheads and gotten ok results? If so, which one? Im in the market for a pair of overheads, pref. Large Condenser.

any ideas?

:)  :p ;) :D  :o  :(

I've used the MXL 603s, SDCs, for overheads with very good results. They now have the 604 out, which has both omni and cardioid capsules. I can't think of any LDCs in the MXL line that I would prefer to the 603/604, but I haven't tried them all.

I'm a fan of the 603's. Some say they're a bit sizzly over the cymbals but placement and practice works for me. If you go this way, for another 50 bucks, surf ebay for the omni capsules. A nicely rounded kit this way.

I've been using the 603's for years and really like them. DO IT.

i have used both the 603 and the 2003 i prefer the 2003 because they are ldc and have pick up the whole kit better the the 603 do fine on cymbal and since all the other drums are miced i dont really worry about getting the whole kit in the overheads as much

i've found the 603's to be a little too hyped in the highs for my liking for use as overheads, but obviously some folks use em to great results. i've found the 603 to be an excellent close mic for snare (and i would assume toms, if i had more of them) as well as cymbals (got one on my ride right now, actually). i've used the 603 both over and under the snare and it handles the job quite well.

i have had quite good results out of the V67 as an overhead. i think i need a 2nd one, but i really dig the mono drums i'm getting with it at the moment. there's just something about the sound of the V67's midrange that's pretty nice for getting the meat of the snare without too much hihat or cymbal shrillness.

i've also used the V77 as an overhead, but i admit that i like it a lot better in front of the kick.

cheers,
wade

ill one up the 603 being sizzly or hyped. from my experience with those mics, they work well for spot micing hihats or ride cymbals but not for overheads, IMO. ive been using the MXL v67g for overheads with decent results, however, i prefer the Behringer B1 on overheads. for the money, these mics cannot be beat. they really shine for overhead use and acoustic guitar backing tracks. at $99 a pop you cant go wrong. the B1 also features a low cut filter and -10db pad built into the mic which is really handy for loud drummers. ive also had great results using this mic on guitar cabs.

I have both 604's and and v67's in my live mic packs. I have found that they both sound pretty harsh in the 2k and up stuff. Drum overheads is the one thing I really avoid them on.

A pair of V69s would be very nice OH mics. V67s would work well too.
