What does THIS button do?
There is an ad in Musicans Friend for a pair of MXL 993s for 179. I am thinking about buying them because right now I am using CAD CM217s and it seems like a lot of people on here use MXL's for OH's. Do you guys feel they are good overhead mics? And is there something that I can get for the same price or a little more that might sound better? I am going to be recording in a garage that is about 15x20 that sounds pretty good. It's not completely dead and I like the way my drums sound in the room alone and I want to try to capture the way they actually sound as good as possible.

I have a friend who uses them for overheads. The sound pretty good. I am getting the same sound with a cheaper set of mics though. But I think mine are not being sold anymore. Mine are small diaphram though, which I prefer for overheads.

hm that's almost the same mic as the CADs that I have :\

btw, this is my problem with the overheads that I own currently: They sound NOTHING like the kit actually sounds in the room, and I know that it is supposed to pick up certain frequencies and omit the low frequencies and such but when I try to balance the kit out and make it sound like it does in the room with all the other mics, it sounds terrible. In fact the only good sound I ever got out of those overheads is when I used one and recorded with the rest of my band playing at the exact same time...

Take a look at the MXL 603's.

They are pretty much the best budget mic I've bought. I use them for overheads, and they are great. All I do to my overhead tracks is roll off 12db's at 750hz. I don't need to add any low end or highs, and generally all I use to mic the drumkit are a pair of 603's, an AKG D112 on each kick, and a Beyer M422 on the snare (well, actually IN the snare via a "MAY EA" internal microphone mount.)

Now, admittedly, sometimes I'll trigger the kicks or use a mic on the batter side as well as out front of the kicks to add more "click" or "slap" to the sound, but the overheads stay the same.

I've also used the 990's as overheads, and they don't sound bad either - although they do have a little bit different sound do to the mic case's configuration....they have the same basic mic element as the 603's, but the 603 has a "tighter" sound to them.

word. I can get a pair of those for 70/piece + shipping... The only thing is, if they sound poopy I am going to eat my CADs lol

Do a search on them and read some of the reviews of them right here at Homerec - there are a whole slew of us who use the 603's.

I've used Earthworks and had a pair of Shure SM81's, and I prefer the 603's for the Overheads - there's just something about them that I really like.

I also recommend SDC's for general purpose overheads. However, the MXL 991, which CAN be cheaper is really just a 603....sound almost the same! I personally like LDC's myself, but that's mainly cause I don't mic the toms individually!

Thanks.. I ordered the 603's the other day though. I should get them soon and when I do I am going to try to throw some recordings together. I've got my drums in a friends garage right now and I think I'm going to be doing most of the recording down there unless it doesn't sound very good (I think it will though, it has pretty good acoustics) then I will do it up here in my 'studio' but anyway I hope they sound as good as I think they will or else I am going to have a pair of used 603's up for sale ;)
