Why not call MXL and ask them? Their sales and tech support person is Scott Riedle. You can reach him at 800-800-6608, ext. 105

Thanks for the contact info, FP! I did indeed call Scott and here is what I found out:

The 993 is the new MXL SDC. It has 10db attenuation and lo freq. rolloff switches, and Scott said it is purported to have more "sizzle" than the 603s. He also said that it was so new (shown at NAAM), that he has not seen the exact specs on the mic. It supposedly will be available in 30-45 days. MF has it listed, indicating that it will be available on 9/10:

I also asked him about the 991 (which has been discussed here a couple of times). He said that it it "based on" on the electronics of the 603s. I got the impression that it is similar but not identical, i.e., not just a repackaging.

Does anyone know if these 993s will replace the 603s? I got a vmail today from local music shop that they can't get the 603 pair anymore as "they've been discontinued and replaced with something else but dsitributor yamaha will give it to you for the same price". I'll call to get details but does anyone know any more to waht's happenin wiht the 603 line? Appreciate any reviews of the 993 too.

thx

993 info

i just picked up a 993, but haven't used it yet. I'm primarily a newbie to recording; i've done some home recording but our drummer owned and operated the equipment (he's a bit too short-tempered with the process to teach me how to run it...a paradox, i know; you'd think he'd appreciate some backup). i'm getting into recording in order to "let some of the music out of my head", with the added notion of setting up a small studio once i learn how to get good sounds from the equipment. I just bought the MXL 990/993 set from Musician's Friend; i don't have anything to run it into yet, but at the current pricing i thought it best to pick up the mics first (so although i'm considering the Fostex MR-8, i'm open to suggestions...i suspect i'll need more tracks. I'll bring that up in a more appropriate forum though). More to the point, i'm aware of the pros and cons of the 990, but have found little on the 993 and i too would appreciate commentary from anyone who's used it. I'm going to try it out with a couple of friends who've got 4-tracks, but any advice from a more experienced user would be great.

By the way- I realize i should have used a more general thread for my first post, but this has my interest as i just bought one. i'm headed off to finish reading the remaining forums soon. thanks for any info.

The 993's are priced right. Having more "sizzle" doesn't seem good, though. I imagine the sound of bacon frying.

The 603's are bright. I guess the 993's are even brighter?
