what are the differences in tonal characteristics with these two mics? ex. warmth, brightness, low end, high end...treble, all that good stuff....the 990 is like $60 and the v67 is $100...goodbye

The MXL990 is a SDC and the V67G is a LDC.

The 67G is a nice warm blanket while the 990 says beat me up, scream at me, tonally that is...

If you want a warm creamy ballad or a slow jazz tune you would go with 67G if you are doing rock vocals, hip hop or in yer face guitar amp micing then I would use the 990. The 990 is very neutral so you have to push it. The 67G is a little more sensitive and detailed.

MXL 990 Live?

Just wondering if the 990 had a tight enough pattern to be of any use live in situations with medium to high SPLs or is its usefulness strictly limited to the studio and soft acoustic gigs?

This would be a reason for me to pick the 990 right now becuase I don't have enough live mics to go around....

Thanks

Can't say as I have only used it in the studio. The problem might be that you would overdrive the mic as I generally use it at around 7-9 inches out. Chinese mics tend to break down real quick when you move in close.

Both the 990 and the 603 have a 20mm diameter diaphram. While that is larger than some small diameter diaphrams the V67 has a 25mm diamater diaphram, as does the 1006 and 2001. The 2003 has an even larger 27mm diaphram.

not according to Musicians Friend. I've read others saying it is a 603 in another shell... Howcome the lit. says it is a LDC?

Yea, I too saw that MF was advertising the MXL990 on their web site as being a large diaphragm mic... but, the MXL990 uses a 20mm diaphragm... so the MXL990 really is a midium size diaphragm condenser mic. Also, I understand that the MXL603S and MXL990 have the same 20mm gold-sputtered diaphragm in them. Oh, and here''s something else worth noting... the MXL603S Frequency Range is: 20Hz-25kHz and the MXL990 Frequency Range is: 30Hz-20kHz.

The MXLV67G is a large 1" (25mm) gold sputtered, 6-micron diaphragm.

990 = tin can

I can only speak for the 990, but I think it sounds like your recording into a tin can. I don't know if I got a funky one or not, but I definitely wasn't happy with the tone. It required so much EQ work that I only used it a couple times, and now sits in my closet collecting dust. I pulled it out a few weeks ago to do some experimental mic-ing on a guitar and put it right back where I found it in the closet after hearing the results. Don't care for it at all...actually now that I think about it, I'm willing to let you have mine for about half price...I can't think of where I'll ever use it.

If it's in mint condition and comes with the shock mount, stock mount, case, etc... I'll take it. PM me your email address. Thanks

PS... I like the MXL990 sometimes on some guitar amps.

I decided

Thanks for the info middleman and everyone else too. I decided to try the V67 because I am 99+% sure that it is the better fit for my studio application. I figured I should not compromise or I will end up with a mic that doesn't fill either of my needs.

I guess that I will just have to bite the bullet at some point and buy some more dynamics for the live stuff. I hate both feedback and (unplanned) clipping with a passion...

thevirgin, the Marshall MXLV67G is a good mic... I think you made a good choice between the two. :)

I agree with DJL. It's a more versatile mic than the 990.
