Hi,

I am currently in an acoustic trio,(two vocals, one guitar) and we are in need of a new microphone..We mostly are concerned about getting a decent vocal mik, seeing as my guitar has a Fishman pickup system in it..Has anyone used the MXL 990? That package seems like a good deal, MXL 990, and 991 for only 100$. Is it worth it though, will the SM57 be that much better?

Any comments appreciated!

The SM57 would beat both of those mics by a wide margin no matter where you put it. Definatly go with the 57

Are we talking live or recording situations?
If live, the 57.
If recording, the 990.

990 has a wider sound compare to sm57...wayyy different.

+1 on 990 :)

Hey,

We would be using the miks for both recording and live. I'd assume that the 990 would be better for recording, because it is a condenser mik, but I wasn't so sure about how good the SM57 would be for live.. Two seems better than one, even if the 57 may be a bit better, but I'd still have to get stockmounts for the 990..

Don't Forget the 58

For live vox consider the SM58. The 990 is decent for recording vocals for the price. And the 990/991 pair are OK for stereo recording accoustic git.

BTW, I use the 990 w/o a shockmount, and it's not really a problem as long as you're not stomping and flailing about.
