I recently bought the MXL 990/991 microphone package to use with an Mbox 2. When I first got the mics, I tested them out and they sounded fine. About a week later I went to do some recordings and when I hooked the mics up they were both picking up a loud noise that sounded like someone was blowing into them. I hooked up a SM57 to check if it was a problem with the Mbox and there was no noise.

Does anyone know what this noise could be? I know it's not just regular ambient noise because it didn't occur the first time I used the mics.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

someone besides me may know what the problem is based on what you wrote -- but I'd like to ask - do you have any other condenser microphones you can try out? Since the SM57 doesn't use phantom power, it may not expose a problem with the phantom power on the mbox 2 (if there is such a problem).

My guess is the same as Paj. High humidity is the likely culprit. Put thw business side of the mic about 18" above a 60 watt lightbulb (no greater wattage, no closer) for about 24hrs. Then try them out. If it works, then put them in ziplock bags w/ silica gel packs, and don't take them out except to use them. If it doesn't work, try a different cable. If that doesn't work, the problem is most likely the Mbox.-Richie

when u mess with the cable at the mic's end does it stop cuz i had the same problem and that stopped it.

its not moisture or the Mbox if jiggling the cord stops it

i used to hve the pacakge same thing happaend to me, thoght it wa my interface cuz i had da micmate, but its not i reboguth allmy shit i suggst u do the same
