Let us know what your impressions are if you have one. Thanks.

Well, I hope I don;t get flamed for this, but the 604 is supposed to be a 603 with pad and bass roll-off, right? I believe the 993 (which has been available longer) is just about that? am I right?

They don't appear to be the same mic at all. The body design is different and the 604 comes with a switchable omni cap. Looking at the frequency plots on the mxl website (I know it's not the best way to evaluate), the 993 has about a 10dB boost in the 8-10k region. The 604 plot is almost flat in cardioid(maybe a 2dB boost). I would imagine that they sound quite different just based on that alone. Hard to say without actually hearing them, though.

Hmmmm...is the 603 is being discontinued?

The 603 is now being sold in the new "Anniversary Pack" with a 2001 for about the price that the 603 was being sold for itself. The 603 will also be sold in pairs (non-matched), their singles offering will be the new 604 which is a different mic.

I have briefly used one of these 604 mics on an acoustic guitar with the cardioid capsule, and it sounded very nice. I'll have to spend more time with one to get a grip on its true character though. It was a quick sort of "hey a new mic!" listen without in depth comparisons. Initially though I'd say it's more "bite-y" on acoustic and more balanced than the 603.

without having used one and solely based on looking at the plots, i would hazard a guess that this is the MXL answer to the MC012. not as high-end hyped as the 603, capsule interchangability, pad and HPF, etc.

be interesting to see how this plays out. also be interesting to see if the 604 caps will work on the 603's as well.

cheers,

I wonder if they invested in better capacitors too, swapping out the three ceramics directly in the signal path really smoothed out the graininess and harshness often associated with the 603. Do you think the omni capsule will fit on the 603? I doubt it, otherwise why would anyone buy the 604. :D

I will do a comparison for you guys soon if you want. I own a pair of Oktava I can throw in the mix.

That's one way to get rid of the 2001's.

reshp1,

Do you have any information on this? Is it a hard mod to do? Can a drunk monkey do it? If so, I might tackle it for my 2 603's.

Warren, that would be spectactular assuming it wouldn't be too much of a PITA for you. i'm not looking for anything scientific--just a general "gist" sort of thing. i trust your ears (and opinions). :D
