anyone know the difference in sound between these two mics? the mxl 600 is going for around $199.00 and the mxl 603s is going for around $89

Short answer: the MXL 600 sucks

The MXL 603 is a nice detailed microphone, especially good for acoustic instruments like guitar, mandolin, etc.... The MXL 600 is more expensive and yet, paradoxically, the cheaper MXL 603 is a much better microphone. I was fortunate to find a local store that took my MXL 600 in trade for an MXL 603S, and I felt bad for such an unfair trade!

The MXL 600 embodies the sound of mud.

The sad thing is, the 600 is besmirching the reputation of the 603. A friend of mine bought a pair of the 600s, hated them, took them back, and now he won't believe me that the 603s are good.

I wasn't aware that the 600s were still available. I'm surprised...

Granted, I haven't heard the mic itself, but i've never heard anyone even come close to liking it. Wonder what keeps them on the market...

I wonder if the 600 and the 990 share the same diaphragm and electronics, as opposed to the common (mis?)conception that the 603 and the 990 have the same diaphragm?

I'm going to NAMM next week. I'll try to ask Brent Casey and Wayne at MXL about those questions.

I'll be at NAMM too Harvey. Maybe I'll see ya there.

A friend of mine is reporting for an un-named Music Magazine, and I'm going as his assistant Photographer and chauffer.

HA!
