Musician's feedback

You might have better luck posting this in the mp3 mixing clinic (on this BBS), a few doors down from here.

That's true, unless you really want to get 788 specific users. I suppose it doesn't really matter who comments on your stuff, any and every ear is a good ear and you ought to post as many places as you can find. Then it would actually be cool to see how people who respond that have no knowledeg of the 788 differ from how 788 users respond (a fun little experiment). I've only posted one song on TASCAM.com. That thread ended up with more than 50 replies (counting mine)...some of it was "good job"..."nice work" stuff, but... some of it (Where's Larry Robinson?) was really specific-- so much so that I printed out some mix advice and eq advice, etc...My Mp3 was a classic example of why it is important to share with people who have similar equipment: I've recorded hundreds of songs but never ran the board or paid attention. The advice I got on that other forum (pre-ban...pre-censorship) really changed my way of recording and arranging and helped me look at and understand why my recordings were so muddy...

Right, there are a lot of things specific to the 788 so feedback on mp3's from other 788 users can be quite helpfull. This looks like a good place. For me that would be things like eq, reverb and delay settings used of different tracks since we're stuck with the effects engines. I guess you could use the effects send and return if you had something cool to use, but I don't.

A while back an mp3 url was posted at Tascam's forum and the lyrics were considered offensive my many. Instead of simply deleting the post and simply moving on, Tascam went postal and eliminated the posting of any links to any mp3. Now you can't even post a link to any other bbs. Last night I answered a post there from a user who wanted learn more from others about the recording process in general, so I gave a link to homerecording.com (not the Tascam forum within it) and it was deleted. There is absolutely no justification for that. His needs could not be met there, why squelch infomation that can help the guy?

Oh well, maybe it's time for my medication.

I actually listened to that track that made them go postal and while it was definetly in the eminem type of hardcore rap it never the less was done well and was that artist's right to free speech, at least that was what I thought. The internet is like a t.v. in some ways if you don't like what your watching or hearing then change the channel!

I dunno, and this is coming from someone who put out two biker albums and played sleaze in ski resorts for many years, I thought it was pretty offensive. But that's not the point. I did listen to it all 'cause I was listening to the mix and I think made some suggestions about it.

It's pretty easy to just turn it off. I don't see why Tascam feels such a responsibility for the content of their forum. Too bad, it was fun playing in their sandbox for awhile.

What song was it? I never heard it. I does sound offensive, but my whole argument was that a disclaimer had been added to the post. Had ole Dave In Jersey not done that, my argument would have been different. Depending on how powerful you accept art to be, it can be destructive, and to post a song like that (from what I heard about it) WITHOUT a disclaimer would be blind-siding some of the more conservative types. I don't support that at all. I believe very much in ratings (even of music)...I never understood the whole fight against the PMRC...I never understood Pat's editting posts when they didn't blind-side people with offensive language...Liberals are the most dangerous poeple in the country because they believe in any sacrifice for their cause, and it really upset me (even though I posted only one mp3) that Pat took that stance on the conservative side. As a conservative (basically) I find that very offensive. It's why, as a conservative, I hate guys like Rush Limbau and Mike Gallager...they make conservatives look like real assholes when that really isn't the case. It's called personal repsonsibility. Personal responsibility for what you post....and personal responsibility for the posts you visit when you've been rightly warned.

Or maybe it's just time for my medication (Coors Light)...

Dave in Jersey did indeed give a warning, that said the song was about gang rape and sodomy for starters though kind of sophomoric, so I can kind of see how they thought it was humorus when they put it together as he later stated.

Finally found it...

Ah, happiness. Found this forum after a bunch of searches. For some reason, I had a rough time of it -- usually I'm pretty good with search engines.

Are there any other unofficial Tascam forums that are also worth checking out?

John,
Far as I know there's an attempted start up in Yahoo clubs but I don't think it's gone too far.

I just won't contribute to Tascam's forum anymore 'cause I refuse to be manipulated like that. They keep what pleases them.

Anyway, welcome aboard....got any mp3's? I'm at mp3.com under John Malcolm Penn if you do a search. I'm pretty sure all the files there were done on the 788.

No, no mp3's yet. I'm hoping to record (and finish, this time) some tunes this winter. And not freeze in the process by forgetting to turn the furnace back on after recording sessions :-)

This looks to be a much better place to hang out, to offer another pair of ears, and to be inspired to get off my butt and record stuff.

Tascam's forum is indeed getting silly... "Jeez, someone said a dirty word, so we're gonna mute everyone." A doubly dumb policy -- like requiring people to wear blindfolds to enter a gallery of paintings.

'Tany rate, back to work -- doing a startup is the other reason I don't have any mp3's yet...

Thanks,

-- John

i listened to your tunes

"All of me", I liked your tunes. I know exactly where your coming from. This is the first 788 music i've heard other than my own and the demo song. It was interesting. I really liked the tunes. There are some problems with the mix though. I had to keep it kinda low because the vocals got a bit loud at times. That heavy guitar sound on "funny how the mind grows", though the tune is great, the sound killed it. When that heavy part kicks in, the mix doesnt sound good, but the part is totally cool. Monitors maybe, new guitar processor...? someone else could give you tips a lot better than me, I just wanted to say,
I like the tunes and have played them for everyone who stopped by my house and they said the same thing. Tunes cool, remix needed. Feel free to flame my tunes...www.mp3.com/samicide
Ill be checkin your site for new tunes. (hi-fi)

Thanks Sabbath, I dug the tunes on your site as well. I to agree with the heavy guitar track not sounding good. When I play through my effects at home I sound crisp and clear and thick. Yet on my recording it sounds like a sort of tinny, thin sound. (I am using a DIGITECH GSP-2101) My other problem I am sure is also that I have no monitor's, I just mix through my stereo. It is really cool to have a bunch of 788 people to talk to about all this stuff! THANK YOU HOME-RECORDING.COM!

IN ME AGAIN
