Musician, Heal Thy Mic

I decided to take my mic apart (akg c414b-uls) to see if I could not get it to sound sharper, and what I found was amazing.

Covering the 0.3 micron gold plating was another 0.6 or greater micron dust plating which had accumulated from about 15 years of use.

Anyhow, I washed the grilles and carefully cleaned the dirt of the diaphgram...not a pro job, but I got it clean.

Anyhow, the result is an Amazing, Astonishing, ,Astounding, As... gain in high end and clarity.

I'm happy I did it

I am also resolved never to let a windscreen near my baby again, cos I found those black particles of material that probalby came from hot air blowing the black windscreen particles into the mic

Those particles of black dreck are in the air at all times. The windscreen (if it hasn't disintegrated) probably blocked the buildup, rather than contributed to it.
The logical approach would be to change windscreens before it starts to break down. Much like you change water filters before all the shit captured from the time of installation up until the time of saturation start to unload in your "filtered" product.
