Look into Sandy Bridge tech when gettin a PC, I ordered bits through SCAN, and got an amazing PC for a very low price. For £800 you'll get something that will run anything that's out there in today's market. Massive technological leaps in the past 1 - 2 years have knocked PC prices down by 2/3's. You get loads of 'Bang for your Buck' these days :D

sorry for not putting the software spec in my post so thanks Diggy for posting it up.I'd be interested in hearing from anyone here who can point me to the computer that rings all the bells purely for making good music demos re,my songwriting Cheers Frank

thanks Ritchie Ive bought recently from Scan so will take a look at their site

There's not alot of difference between off the shelf, store-bought systems anymore. If you have a budget and the system requirements in hand, it's time to go shopping........the biggest bang for the buck is additional memory.

The key here is expansion. Are you intending to expand your setup to include RECORDING? Band in a box is only editing existing midi/audio files to create new music. Actual recording is an entirely different animal which places other performance requirements on a computer. The audio interface, number of tracks, Plugin and or samples count, monitoring, etc etc etc. It can be simple or complex, and the variables all determine the choice of computer components AND the OS. For instance, a simple BAND IN THE BOX computer could easily run on a P4 2.8 running WinXP. However, a modern Protools rig running lots of samples and plugins requires an i7 x58 or SandyBridge CPU with compatible mobo, and Win7, as WinXP only allows a max of 4gig of ram, where as Win 7 can access up to 24gig of ram(I believe). Anyway, I would suggest asking yourself what your future aspirations are. This can possibly keep you from wasting time and money on something now that will only have to be upgraded in the future.

Oh, and then there is Apple. Which is an entirely different animal than a PC. If you ARE planning on expanding into AUDIO RECORDING, I'd suggest doing LOTS of research on what is best for your intended path. The options are mind boggleing in this day and age. Each platform has it's pro's and con's. However, your intended destination will give you some clues. For instance, PC's can be a DIY project. Lot's of people build their own PC for a DAW. But very few people can build an Apple...if any. And the software is another animal that will determine a platform choice as well. Good luck.

You must have an old system if it won't run Band In A Box. They don't say the processor recommended, but even a PIII should do, making your current PC seem older than dirt.
Any P4 with XP and lots of RAM should make BIAB go smoothly. But if they say they have Vista and 7 drivers, that leaves you wide open. Practically any PC would do. They're cheap these days; bigger hard drives are cheap, too. It's RAM that can kill you.

With the other specs being so low, any P4 with at least 1GB of RAM should suit you fine. And you could find you a used one for probably $100-$150.
