Multitracking on my Sony TC-230 reel to reel

So I recently bough a sony TC-230 reel to reel and I just have a question about it. I know this might sound like a silly question but with this unit, how do I record on the left side while hearing what I've already recorded on the right side?

I've tried recording stereo and only having one side in, then switching, and then I also tried recording on the one side and switching to lay down a track on the other side, and none of this has worked out for me.

Any way, any assistance would be very greatly appreciated!

I don't believe you can do that with that deck. There would have to be a 'sync' switch in order to do so, along with being able to select which channel you're recording on.

These features are sometimes called 'SIMUL-SYNC' or 'SOUND ON SOUND' -- you need to look for a deck with these features or just a 'SYNC' switch. It's not very common on older consumer decks, so if they had this option, it is usually pretty clearly indicated.
