I am looking to get the best CD recordings I can from our live band rehersals, and have many questions on how to best accomplish this...I hope anyone who records in this setting can offer any advice that comes to mind....
Our band set up is pretty straight forward.....3 Vocals, Bass, Drums, Rhythm/Lead Guitars, Keyboards, Violin...Everyone is linked into our Mackie CFX-20 mixer...
Up until now, I have recorded our practices with a centrallly placed condensor mic into A MD Player....I then transfer all recording to wav files, using Cool Edit, and burn CD's....Ive never expected quality recordings with this method (nor do I get them), and they widely differ after each practice session even though we try to position Mic in same spot, and keep mixer settings realatively the same.........
I want to get quality of CD recordings from these live sessions if possible, whether than entails a single recording from our live mix directly from the board, or investing in the appropriate multitrack recorder to link to our board, and mix after the fact as well.......
I have been experimenting with recording different channels and channel combinations (through sub assigns) directly from the mixer onto my MD player just to get a feel for the recording quality that takes place.....Im having a hard time getting a nice clear recorded mix even in this experimental phase.....
I would love to hear about:
1. Equipment recomendations for this process?
2. Differences I need to consider about mixing for live sound vs. mixing for recorded sound?
3. Am I going to need to do futher mixing after recording in order to get best results? (or should I be able to set up the best mix the first time through in the live setting for a final recorded output?)
4. What recording level considerations should I take into account for each instrument/vocal to get best mix?
Finally, from all the reading I have done here, it seems like the Akai DPS16 is so highly rated among users....Would this machine (or any machine like this)work just as well when recording and mixing based on tracks generated from the live setting vs. the more pristine settng of a studio like environment?
Also because I plan to burn CD's of songs we play each week (up to 15 songs at a time), does anyone know how these machines work with respect to re- mixing 15 or so songs, saving them , and then setting them up to burn to a CD with 15 or so tracks?
Again, I am just looking for the best way to get quality CD recordings of our bands "live" pratcices...Obviously I am new to this whole area, and would love to hear any and all feedback related to how to make this endeavor a sucessful one?
Thank you in advance for your replies.....
