I was planning on buying a multitrack recording studio. I been recording on Sonar 4 and A Korg D16 in the past and have done some projects on the Roland CDX-1 Disclab but have just recently sold my D16. I was thinking about buying a new one but I'm not sure what I should get. I've been thinking mostly about the Korg D1600 or D1200 MKII or a Boss Br1180cd but I'm sure sure exactly what I should put my money in to. I record hip hop music and most importantly I need something with a cd burner or that easily connects with a cd burner for easy backup and cd mastering. Should I get any of the ones mentioned above or should I think about getting something else. I need something in about that price range though b/c my funds aren't too high right now. (Br1180cd Korg D1200 and Korg D1600 sell for about $510, $530, and $615 on EBay respectively) Please help me out.

I use a Zoom MRS-802 w/CD burner. It's only 8 tracks, though, and it sounds like you may be looking for more than that. They do make a unit with more tracks. Records onto two track simultaneously, if desired. I'm very pleased with it - it's quite easy to use, which was important to me, as I'm neither very patient nor very technically oriented! It also offers a few nice features like a built-in guitar tuner, a versatile drum machine, and useful presets for vocals and various instruments in case you want to go direct.

I like the Boss BR 1180 for your application. It comes with drum loops. If you could somehow scrape the money together, the BR 1600 is a great machine 'cause you can record a bunch of XLR ins at the same time (on the 1180 you can only record 2 at a time).

You should know that these machines have 24bit a/d converters but the data is recorded/stored in "only" CD quality 16bit. I don't know how much that matters, but it's something to keep in mind.

I haven't really heard to much about Zoom neither really good nor bad so I hadn't taken that into consideration. Have you had any problems with your unit? I just want to make sure that when I make this investment that I'll be happy with my purchase. 8 Tracks isn't too bad b/c like I said I've used the Roland cdx-1 disclab and have made some great recordings. How large is the hard drive in the mrs-802? And for the Boss Br1180 I've heard some good things about that machine. I guess I should do a little more research on them but I just want a couple opinions from other people who already have some equipment and see what they have to say because specs can be deceiving sometimes. Do the Br1180 or the zoom mrs802 have sample pads?

I heard that fostex had a problem with the hard drives going bad. Have you ever had a problem with yours?

not at all.

its been nothing but amazing to me.

and i got it for when it was 500 on zzsounds with the free gig bag.

even the pre amp sounds pretty good. i use a studio projects b1 with it to do vocals n bass, and then a sm 57 for guitar cabs...and amen i have a drum machine.

Thanks for all the help but I just got a great deal on a Korg D1600 for $500 on EBay so I had to take it. It works out perfect too b/c I used to own a D16 and it's not too much different which allowed me to dive right in. I appreciate the help and opinions. I'll keep them in mind when telling my brother about what multitrack he should start out with.

Fostex uses pretty standard Maxtor Harddrives. I doubt they have any more issues on their than anyone else. The beauty about the Fostex OS is a number of HardDrives will work in Fostex machines.

Consider the VF160EX. A LOT of machine for $799.00.

I'd be careful about buying any one of these on eBay because you don't know how it was treated by the previous owner.

If you already do your recording in Sonar, have you considered a stand alone CD burner if you don't already have a CDRW drive?

A stand alone CD burner would be an external device, but if you have an open slot on your PC I would recommend filing it with a CDRW --- at one time I used a USB 1.1 Iomega external CD burner with my old laptop and made a whole CD with that setup...
