Multitrack (overdubbing) on PC

I'm new to this and have a new PC with a Lexicon Core 2 and a Tascam 'deluxe' CD burner. I have mics, mixer etc from 'way back in the 1900's when I recorded analog and have spent several years doing multitrack tapes. Trying out my new PC, with the Cool Edit Pro SE included with the Lexicon, I can record 4 tracks...and then what? whattayamean, 32 channels if you erase No 1 everytime you get to No 5? How do I get to more than 4 tracks?? With the Sek'd Red Roaster the included mixing/recording device is similar: I can record track 1 then go to track 2 and overdub, then return to track and overdub...where'd track 1 go? Their website boasts 'up to 999 tracks' but doesn't mention only having 2 adjacent tracks at once. What's the secret? the Help is a little thin on the ground for an old cuss like me (I bet I've got tape decks older than most of you guys -- if only I could understand mr computer the way I thought I understood tape decks).
Any advice appreciated. JW
 
I can't find much info about LE on syntrillium's site. It does seem to indicate an upgrade path from LE to Pro, which will give you 64 Tracks.

I think the problem your having is a limitation of the software, ie. crippled software. Similiar to Cakewalk Home Studio.

You have the option of upgrading to Cool Edit Pro or 2000 (at a somewhat reduced price). Or considering a totally different multitracking package.

If MIDI is of no concern to you, I strongly recommend checking out Vegas Pro, I've been playing around with the Demo for a while now and am quite impressed. Coming from an analog background myself, I found Vegas much simplier and "bells & whistles" free than say, Cubase, Cakewalk and others.

Don't take my word for it on Cool Edit SE, I don't know for sure that it is limited to 4 tracks, (probably 8 mono, or 4 stereo). Maybe someone else knows for sure.

Try out the demo's of Vegas Pro, Cubase, Cakewalk, you will find something you like.

thanks but I suspect the problem is due to my ignorance. What sort of path do you go through to add tracks: edit? new multitrack?
I've already gone through all my whiteout muting the incidental noise. Thanks again

I use Cubase so I the steps would be quite different. Try posting your question in the Cool Edit Pro forum. S8-N is syntrillium user, he might have some input.

OK, I figured it out. One of them many buttons did the trick. thanks for the link to audioforum -- that's a gooder.
