Multiple EQ settings on the one track - is there a better way?

Son of Yoda
Hi

I have a track for which I need to have different EQ settings in different spots. It has to be a switch thing, not a gradual transition. I'm using the standard Reaper EQ plug.

So far the only way I've worked out how to do this is to set up two different instances of ReaEQ with the different settings saved as presets, then use two envelopes to toggle the Bypass parameter on and off in the appropriate places. That works, but seems a bit difficult - especially if I want to alter the points for the switch as I have to edit them in both envelopes.

Is there a simpler way that I'm missing?

Cheers

You can automate any of the ReaEQ parameters.

Yeah, I know, but I don't want to change 10 individual parameters to get to a new EQ setting and then back and forth several times in the song. I just want to flick between setting A and setting B, several times on the one track.

This is a piece of cake to do on my obsolete standalone - store settings then recall them when needed - so I'm assuming there's a simpler way of doing it in Reaper. I expected to find a "select preset" type setting in the envelope menu but I didn't. Unless I've missed it.

Cheers

split the track into the bits that need different treatment, put them on different tracks, and set the eq as desired on each track

TROLL ALERT!!

Or, just go to Cubase, and forget about the 'work around's'. That would be a simple two click maneuver.

Ok, sorry, bored.

That's one way for sure. Or, you can also set up the diferent EQ's, split your items and "render item to mono" for each item with the EQ you want on it, while bypassing the other EQ's. Your EQ will then be printed on each part, though.

He wants to be able to move the split points around after adding the EQs.

Seems the best way would be to split and then add the EQs as Item FX. Pretty sure these will come before anything in the Track FX, so if you're trying to EQ after some other effects it gets a bit more complicated.

I'm not sure how that's done in REAPER, but it sounds almost exactly like what I suggested. "APPLY TRACK EFFECTS TO ITEM AS NEW TAKE" is what I'm talking about. We might be talking about the same thing.

Gecko's suggestion will work just fine, too.

Can you automate the bypass (is there a bypass button?) in Reaper? That would be better and easier than automating the bands in the EQ.

Yeah, automating the bypass is what I worked out on my lonesome before I posted the question... I was just thinking it seemed an unduly messy way to do it in that it creates two new envelopes and two EQ instances.

I could split the tracks as gecko suggested but as I already have pan, volume and effects envelopes on the track, that's just getting way too messy - it is one guitar take, I want to keep it that way because of those other variations I'm doing if possible. Same as printing the effects on the track, because I'm sure I'm going to change my mind about EQ once I add in some more stuff and try to mix it properly - I'm just assembling a rough mix as I go at the moment.

Never mind, my original solution works fine and seems easiest... thanks for the input guys.:)

And Jimmy..... you realise you almost gave Crows rep for coming up with the solution that I'd actually written in the first post....:D:laughings::spank::thumbs up: now go back to the Cubase forum... I'll concede this one to you but for $60, I'll live with Reaper's little quirks...:listeningmusic:

Or double the track, apply EQ A to one, EQ B to the other, then volume automate.

You're just mad that I am too awesome to actually fully read the OP aren't you. :D

LOL!!..............................

Nope. Item FX are non-destructive (realtime) insert type effects attached to individual items in track view. They come before anything you see in the mixer. Not completely sure if they're automatable, but I think they are.

Edit - sorry, guess it's called "Take FX" in reaper.
