I've just started using an M-Audio Audiophile USB with my Pentium IV system and Cool Edit. I'm running the outs from my TS-12 synth into the M-Audio and then running the out on the M-Audio to my studio amp and monitors. Why can't I hear my synth through my monitors when I play the synth live? It's recording fine into CE and I can hear the playback from CE fine. I can't find any control panel in the M-Audio software that allows me to choose an input. The on-board sound card in my system has a mixer that allows me to choose line-in, mic-in, etc., but I don't seem to have these options available with the M-audio. (The on-board soundcard is automatically disabled when I plug-in the M-Audio). Am I missing something here?

This is a Cool Edit question and I don't use Cool Edit, but I can give you a start maybe.

There is a setting somewhere in your software that is like a thru for your audio. it may say "Sound Thru" or "Echo Audio" or somehting like that. That will allow the audio you send to the software to go through it and back out the outputs of the soundcard.

A warning. When monitoring through the software there is almost certianly a lag or delay of some sort. I personally can't stand it, though I guess some people get used to it.

There are 2 ways to get around it.

#1 is to use a mixer to run your audio through and you can monitor from the mixer, thus hearing what is played live and what is played from the PC at the same time.

#2 is to find a soundcard with built in hardware monitoring. This is one of the reasons I got the MOTU 828 myself. It is basicly a mixer built into a soundcard so you can hear your inputs along with the output of the PC.

OK, thanks. I'll look into it. Sounds like a MOTU 828 might be in my future ;)
