I now have sonar set correctly. Midi and regular audio are both coming out now. Thanks Tim, and everyone else! So how do I improve the options I have for instruments? I'm assuming I would have to buy software to expand my options here. Or is that something that comes directly from the sound card (i.e. sbpci wavesynth)??

p.s. this is THE best message board out there...I've never had a question that I didn't get the answer for at this site.

cheers!

I don't think there's much you can do to improve the sound of the SB PCI 128's wave synth. I don't believe that card has Sound Font capability...

You can try other software synths, or use the MIDI interface and get an external MIDI synth.

Software synths. Would that be a program that you would install on your computer and change the midi device settings to use? Any rec's on brands? And what about drums--is there software out that functions (well) as a drum machine? I have a Dr. Rhythm I've been using, but the sounds are less than realistic.

I'll pass on recommending any since I have little experience with any. There are indeed some that are drum machine-type programs (Battery is one whose name I've heard). Hopefully someone else here can steer you better than I can.

Reason is a pretty cool retro sounding drum/loop/rythm package. A lot of people use software synths but I think they sound pretty stale. Kinda depends on your hardware and what sounds you need.

you know, I'd really be happy to just find a good drum machine program that sounds better than my Dr. Rhythm. I have heard of Reason. Maybe I'll try that. Thanx again!

FruityLoops is pretty popular. I havent used it yet but will probably give it a try.

Reason can do some cool stuff because you can load in more samples that are specific to what you want.

You can also improve the sound of your drum machine by recording individual drum hits, processing them to suit your needs and creating your own loops in Sonar.

Yeah I use FL alot, it's really straight forward and the possibilities are endless as there are sooo many samples out there. I also use the Pro-52 soft synth and I think it absolutely rocks. Some really phatt sounds IMO, haven't played with Reaktor much but have heard it's cool. Again it depends on what type of tunes you're lookin to make!
