gimmi your mic!
I've watched some episodes of "making the band" by P.Diddy on MTV last night. Have you'all seen that show? Its about P. Diddy trying to make hip hop "superstars" out of a bunch of 7 young people.

I noticed that most of the recording sessions are done in the little studio inside the house where the band lives. I think I spotted a Neumann mic inside the vocal booth. Did anyone recognize which mic that is? Any other ideas as to what equipment they use? I've seen a Mac as the "brain" of the studio. The mic in the middle of the studio could have been a Shure KSM 44 or so. Have you recognized more of their gear (pre-amps., console)? I am curious to get their album when its out and see how it turned out.

I saw it.

Looks like a Neuman to me. Im not sure though.

What did catch my attention was the strategic placement of acoustic treatments. I dont know if they just threw them up wherever or if they were placed for room tuning. If it was for room tuning,, then I am no where near where I need to be.

They were everywhere in the vox booth too.

Wyclef did have 2 pair of Genelecs though. LOL

right, the acoustic treatment is interesting. It sure looks like they had some pros setting up the studio. They seem to be running ProTools. The mic is definitely a Neumann coz I spotted the red logo. I also found three images of the studio on the MTV website. Pretty nice studio, I must admit -- at least for a stupid tv show :p

It might be that this is just a demo studio they setup in the house so they can write their songs, then when they get them fleshed out they do it in the "real studio", cuz you know that's not where P does his recording.

well, seeing how much effort they put in tracking the vocals (dozens of takes) I could imagine that they record the vocals in that studio and mix it at another facilty.

From what I can make out from the pics, the console is a Mackie 32 Bus, which they only use for monitoring. Small monitors are small Mackie's. Large monitors are Tannoy's. They're using Pro Tools HD on a Mac G4. In the right rack is a Focusrite ISA 220 - looks like they do all their tracking through it - as I don't see any other mic pres or channel strips.

Actually, I just found a link at Sweetwater that lists the entire studio...

you are my hero, Dot! That's more info than I had hoped for! Perfect.

The gear list is pretty cool, but what's frustrating is the fact that they got all the stuff obviously for free from the manufacturers. I must be in the wrong business.

What gets me is that between everybody in that house they don't have a single ounce of talent!

that's why they bring in tons of million-copies selling producers, songwriters, coaches, etc, I guess. The marketing strategy is pretty clever, though: they earn tons of money with that stupid tv show and will probably sell millions of CDs from the band simply due to their tv exposure. They can't really fail, regardless how bad the band will be, can they?

i never understood that. just need some tv exposure and people will buy anything. who is buying it is the question

How can they call it a band, anyway? The episode I saw looked like it's just a bunch of self-absorbed rappers stuck in a plush house. I didn't get the idea that there was anybody there that could figure out how to press "play" on a beatbox, much less program one.

I guess plenty of kids will buy the CD, dreaming of stardom & fame. That's the whole concept of that show, is it? To give kids a fake dream about being famous with only little talent.

It's pretty sad commentary on our society that the most popular programming on tv is our fellow citizens humiliating themselves in ways they never thought possible.

This "band" is only headed for disaster. These fools are being used by Puffy so he can tell us how wonderful he is. We need to know what "real hiphop is" from this wonderful rapper. Puffy lives the life of hiphop - like demanding kids run crosstown to get cheesecake...that is the essence of hiphop...surely indeed..Anyways - back to this shameful group of kids and why they wont succeed...

First off - no one has very good talent. These kids are, for the most part, pretty stupid in general and pretty immature.
Second - these kids do not cooperate. If you cant get along in a posh house, where the normal stresses (paying the bills, working a full day at McDonalds then recording/playing, etc.) dont exist, how can you stay together later? Sure they have to satisfy an arrogant jackass in Puffy - but otherwise - they have nothing to deal with. I just imagine these clowns on the road, trying to tour, dealing with the hell (which is especially what it will be since they all hate each other) that goes along with that...additionally - they wont be civilized in interviews (constantly following scripts or beating the other group members into a pulp). These kids have shown themselves to be morons with inflated egos, and limited smarts...
Third - because they have little talent, and because they cant mesh as a group (unless Wyclef is around) - they wont make good music. Of course good music to most of America is Puffy, Nelly, etc. But I doubt this stuff will go any further than one album.
The group will never last and they will never make wonderful music. Yes they may sell a bit the first week or two - but then they can join O-Town and the other manufactured TV Bands wasting away somewhere.

Scinx -- I couldn't agree with you more! My guess is that they will release a commercially very successful single and a follow-up album, only to be dropped by Diddy a few months later and disappear in oblivion. Somehow I feel sorry for the kids coz Diddy is just using them to boost his ego.

How is that different from any other rapper?
