Peavey ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone know of a video player that can sync to MTC?

I found some programs that create internal MIDI channels to pipe midi data between programs. I'm trying to use it to sync Pro Tools with a video player. If I can find one that syncs to MTC, I'm set.

Adobe Premiere, surprise surprise, does not! I wasn't expecting that.

Take care,
Chris

There aren't any.

Getting a VCR that understands SMPTE timecode can be done, but it's really expensive.

However, something like this

might do the trick for you. It will work with Sony and Panasonic consumer-level VCRs that support the either LANC (Sony) or EDIT E (Panasonic). I think a lot of the consumer devices from these companies include jacks for these.

You need a box that can generate SMPTE/MTC. These are always bi-directional, so you just need a VCR deck where you can dub audio (record the audio track without recording over the video signal). Then you just record the SMPTE audio to one of the audio tracks and run it back through the SMPTE box.

Most of the higher-end MIDI interfaces from Midiman, eMagic, etc., provide this functionality; price point is roughly $300. It's hard to find a dubbing VCR, though.

These days most people are digitizing the video, which allows you to synch to it directly from withing whatever recording application you are using pretty seamlessly and with random access... it's so much nicer to work that way...

Thanks, guys.

AlChuck- San Mateo, eh? We're neighbors. We're all neighbors, in fact.

Chrager- I'll have to find a way to be down in S.C, one of these days...

I'm kinda shocked that there is no video software that syncs to external SMPTE or MTC. Not even Avid or Premiere, though I still have to check in with Final Cut. Seems like it would be an easy feature to add to the software. I can't really afford any hardware options, though I did look to see what's involved.

Between Pro Tools and Cubase SX, I should be able to work out some way of handling synced audio and video, but the internal video players on both tend to max out...well, everything- the video card, processor, and hard disks. Realtime multitrack audio and simultaneous video is still a push.

I guess I can't have my cake and eat it, too. Looks like my only option is the ol' make a tiny video to import into PT or SX, do my mixing and sound effects there, export the mix, then import and sync with the original and re-render the whole deal at full quality.

I love waiting for video to render!! (groan...)

Sure would be nice, though, if I could just control Final Cut's play back on the Mac with MTC from Pro Tools... no more DAYS of rendering.

Interesting....

Poking around on the Digi Users board I found this

Echo Fire

Apparently, its software that outputs DV from within a program to standard firewire DV. Hook it up to a camera, let IT do the conversion to video and send it to a TV monitor. In theory, it works with any program that uses Quicktime to handle the video stream. That would include Cubase SX and Pro Tools. Hmmm...

The video is still streaming off the harddrive (which could be separate from the audio drive) but at least the video card doesn't have to deal with it.

$255. If we do much more fancy video/audio work here, it might be worth it.
