Stand Up Comity
Has anyone tried one of these? Looks awfully inexpensive. Says it's hand assembled. Is there some oppressed offshore sweatshop putting these together? I'm a bit leary of taking advanage of exploited labor. Don't I need to spend like two grand on a Nooman to get a good acoustic guitar recording? Or should I consider a Brüel & Kjær? Will Behri come out with a cheaper version? I wonder what kind of pre works best with it.

Most likely, yes. Five-year-old Indonesian hands are still hands, for marketing purposes.

Join the dark side, you shall be more powerful than you could ever imagine!

That's Noyman to you.

If it sells well, yes.

:D

Yeah I'd like to see Behri try to take me on!

Or if you're too cheap for even Behri, roll your own! I posted the schemo here earlier.

Those Mics Look Like they are Home made mics, Probably very simular to the Tape Op mic accept I don"t knopw how he Fits the Phantom Power Circuitry inside a Small XLR Connector but he is Probably useing Elecrolytics.....

At least they are Cheap...

I've used a pair as room mics to enhance drum tracks on a song. The artist and I were very pleased with how it rounded out the sound of the kit. I'll post the song once it's mixed.

EDITED TO ADD: I ran them through my M-Audio Octane right into the interface.

I just ordered a matched set.
They use phantom power. My tapeop mics that I built use a 9v battery.

That "Rock Band" clip sounds really compressed on my computer speakers!

Did you notice the seller's name? If it's the same Mshilarious that hangs here, I'm sure he'd answer any questions.

Yeah it's me. These mics are no secret, there was a thread here about building these sort of mics a month ago or so. I thought my phantom power design was clever enough to sell. :) As I said earlier, if you'd like to roll your own, my design as well as construction pictures (of the first prototype, the final design is a little different) are there.

They are similar to the Tape Op mics in that sense that they use a 6mm Panasonic capsule housed in an XLR connector. However, Panasonic has a better capsule available since the Tape Op article, and as my design runs off phantom power, it's much more convenient and also cheaper to build! The cost of a Tape Op mic, with the capsule, connector, 2 chassis mount XLR connectors, an extra cable (OK you'd probably have that laying around), and a 9V battery would be as much or more than I'm selling my mics for :) Also my circuit design has been optimized to perform better at lower preamp input impedances than the Tape Op mic.

Compared with other cheapy omni mics like the Behri or Apex, mine is slightly more sensitive, with better high end response. This is probably largely attributable to the capsule itself, although I suppose they could have mucked up their design with cheap caps or poor component matching, I don't know. The Behri design has lower output impedance, so it is more suitable to a 600 ohm input, but most people have 1K input impedance or higher these days, so that's a push.

I did play with an active design, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to stuff 2 transistors AND 4 caps in an XLR connector, and the connector is what enables me to sell these so cheaply.

For those who need a power supply, I'm kicking around an inline power supply housed in a larger Neutrik connector, run off 2 12V batteries. Maybe in two or three weeks I might have something.

There will be other random projects showing up in my store too, as soon as I get time to roll 'em out! And they will all be cheap, too :D

That's Noyman to you.

and that is NOYMAHN not MAN to you. ;)

For acoustic guitar, the following are phenomenal:

Gefell m296
Gefell MK221(w josephson c617 bodies)
Schoeps MK2S or mk41

I like mixing an SDC and ribbon.

Gonna have to sweet talk my wife into giving me the $$$ for the matched set with clips. Have you sent one to Harvey to listen to? You should :-) !!!!!

Actually I've got about 6 prototypes laying around here, none of these are the final design, but they all work and sound OK . . . PM me if you want one, I'll send one to you free!

I'm not going to send out pairs though, these definitely do NOT match.

I am intrested in making a stomp box for shits and giggles and I was wondering what kinda stuff I can make with kits
something cool but also something to get my foot in the door to electronics.

Yeah, a stomp box is a good place to start, relatively few parts, low voltage, instant gratification :) There are lots of designs out there, many with PCBs you can buy, a few with complete kits. I have stompbox design that I'm going to sell as a kit, but I just can't get the time to finish it off . . .

Anyway, there is a DIY stompbox forum, I forget exactly where it is, since I don't hang out there, but also muzique.net is a pretty good site.

50 bucks for a pair, huh? I might have to jump on that. Unless, of course, you're still giving away some prototypes :)

Hell, I'd probably jump on it anyways!

Here are a Few Sites that will give you Ideas and Schematics for Building Pedals....

http://home.cfl.rr.com/dbhammond/doug.htm

http://www.diyguitarist.com/DIYStompboxes/MyStompboxes.htm

http://www.diystompboxes.com/pedals/klinks.html

http://www.geofex.com/

That is Probably enough to get you started (Or in Trouble..LOL) ,I also have some Good reading Material on electronics that will help you understand how to read a schematic and understand what components do what and why....

If you want some of this reading material PM me and I"ll upload it somewere for you....

Cheers

Just got my 2 MSH-1's in the mail today. :D :D :D :D
Hope I get a chance to try them out tonight.

Cool! I got MadAudio's drum samples in the mail today, they sound kick ass! I'll be adding those to the auctions.

I still can't get my own crummy website up, my host won't respond to my ticket  Urge to kill rising

Here is the file though:

MadAudio Rocks!

Oh hey! More news! I have finally succeeded in building an "active" prototype and fitting it in the XLR :) Early results show stability down to 600 ohm input impedance, still need to do a long cable test to see how much that matters. I will publish that circuit when I'm sure it really works and actually fits, although I will warn you it's significantly more difficult to build :(

Even better, I have an idea for a "tube simulation" circuit. Oh yes, there are more good things to come. :)

PM me if anybody wants to be a tester (free samples!) for models #2 & #3, probably towards the end of the month. I do ask an .mp3 in return ;)
