Taking the slow road
Zoom has a drum machine too, is price $50 more. They must have found that the MR8 sold well, or is still selling well. I doubt it's much better.

I just discovered the MRS-8 this morning...it's advertised on the front page of Music123.com. It's funny how even the name is almost exactly the same as MR-8! I noticed that that for $350 it doesn't include the A/C adapter though, so add another $20-25 or so to the price...typical pathetic zoom tactic to keep the price low. It also comes with a 128mb card, just like the MR-8, andthe features are almost identical. The MR-8 must be a big seller if they're copying it!

zoom

did they change the data format, the old zoom recorders used compressed data, unlike the mr8.... if they are smart they did....

MRS-8 - Multi-Track Recording Studio

The Zoom MRS-8 is a full-featured compact eight-track digital recorder with an incredible array of professional recording features including a fully programmable Drum/Bass Machine with touch-sensitive pads.

Beyond the drums, the MRS-8 has a huge array of instrument, vocal and mastering effects and extensive digital editing capabilities. With 8 physical tracks, each with 10 Virtual-takes, you have up to 80 recording tracks to play with. The MRS-8 has 2-track simultaneous recording at an optional non-compressed, 16 bit linear, 44.1 sampling rate with 24-bit AD/DA resolution. It records to SD memory cards, currently compatible up to 1 GB. The MRS-8 comes with a 128MB SD card included, to get you on your creative way right out of the box.

The MRS-8 offers simultaneous playback of 8 audio tracks plus the drum and bass tracks. A Sequence Play function allows a number of songs to be played back continuously. A Dedicated Master Track is built-in, for mix-down, so there is no need for an external master recorder. Connection-wise, the MRS-8 has everything you need including a 1/4-inch Hi-Z input for Guitar, an XLR combo jack for an external microphone or line level signal, stereo RCA master outputs, headphone out, and MIDI out so MIDI Time Code or MIDI clock can be sent for synchronizing with external devices. Also, the MRS-8 comes with an amazing-sounding front panel mini-condenser microphone.

The MRS-8 is a complete compact recording studio, great for laying down ideas or complete multi-track CD quality music.

Pretty cool machine :)
If I didn't have my MR-8, I would probably get this one.

No mention of USB on the Zoom MRS-8,...

which is one of the more forward-looking features on the Fostex Mr-8.

I'm no big fan of either the MR-8 or MRS-8. I'm not sold. IMO, they both suck. YMMV.

Aaaaaaaaawwwwwww!! Mr. 8 & Mrs. 8! They're a happy little 8-track couple! When are the little-8's coming around?

hahahahahahahahahahahaha............. :)

yea, I noticed the Mr. and Mrs. thing. Cute marketing people. I'd like to record more than 2 tracks so I'm looking for more. I just upped my laptop memory to try some software, finally. It's not new or very fast, so it may be a ten minute test....

I saw that review of the Zoom 16 track, but it had a option for the usb. I don't see 16 tracks for much less than $1k by anyone. So that's a big research project. It could take me 6 months or more....

I kinda like the little Zoom 4 track for taking to work and stuff, very small and 4 batteries. Compressed, but it could be a nice scratch pad, w/ the built in mic.

If the MRS8 solved many of the MR8's issues, it could be a huge success. But I don't see that, yet.
