Once I have the music part of the recording done, I was thinking about working on a project in Audacity.

Do I have to download the files from the MR8-MKII, or can I just run the card through my normal high speed downloader direct to the computer and open them in Audacity like any other wav file?

I think you can download direct but, to be sure, also download Wavmanager from the Fostex site for use with the USB connection.

The tracks are recorded as .Wav files so I believe a direct transfer on to your HD should work.

Just found a quote from the Fostex forum which may answer your question:-

Using Wav manager will keep your tracks in sync when you put them in mixing software. If you don't use the wav manager and use a card reader, editing done on tracks in the mr8 such as punch-ins will not transfer as complete tracks

WavManager treats the card reader as just another input to your PC so USB and card reader are treated the same.
