ok, after checkin all my options for recording more than 2 tracks simultaneously, i think i am leaning towards the mr8HD. Aybody try it yet?? I have the original mr8, and i think it works just fine, good quality to me, but then again I always transfer the unmastered wave files to my pc for all the effects and editing, with magix music maker. Thanks

i own the mr8hd and have had very few problems, but, if you do purchase it, make sure you get the online updates before you do anything, if not, it's prone to crash. but, i have found it to be a very good machine, i like mine quite a lot

its a prtty nice machine. lots of memory. the downsides are the pre amps and effects are prtty weak.

Yes after updates I too have liked mr8hd a lot. easy as pie.
Now I only hope it had more tracks! :)

its ok

I had a fostex vf-08 or whatever the original fostex digital 8 track was in this form. It had pretty good preamps and was a very solid machine. It blew up after about 4 and a half years of solid use, and I instantly purchased an mr-8hd afterward and am pretty disapointed comparing the quality of the two machines. The original machine was like the VF80EX. Comparing the button quality and everything else it doesn't compare. I highly suggest going the extra 200 dollars and getting a VF80EX instead of the MR8HD, a lot less hiss and a lot better preamps. Although using the mr8hd spdif'd into the computer that isnt so much a problem, but the build quality is a lot less.

Ive had one for some time now. I got it for two reasons: 4 mic inputs and the USB connection. It rules.

There seem to be some mixed feelings here... we were thinking of buying one of these MR8HD to record voice-overs, and set recordings for movies. Would that be the right choice for us, or will the MR8HD be too noisy?

The intention is to buy a M_Audio Nova microphone for voice-over recordings. Is that combination going to give us some GOOD voice overs?

ive own an mr8hd and ill admit the pres can get pretty noisy. the headphone amp is EXTREMELY noisy. i suggest investing in a better preamp to use with the machine.

In the mean time, we got us such an Fostex MR8 HD, and I'm quite pleased with the functionality.

What I'm not so pleased with, is the noise level, not to say it is really poor. Without a scientific measurement, I notice the following: when recording with peaks upto roughly -6 dB, the noise level which I see in Cool Edit is around -45 dB. That is by far not what I expected from that machine.

I'm using an ADK Vienna large membrane microphone with this, which has good noise levels according to some reviews I read on the net.

As an alternative, I tried to use a separate tube pre-amp (Presonus Pretube), which is not top quality, but should be quite reasonable for noise levels. Also with that setup, the noise level is not really improving.

Anyone an idea what could be wrong?

noise is a huge problem with the lower end stuff, on one track you can hear it if you try, and maybe on 2 it's ok, but adding up more tracks and different kinds of noises, can get pretty bad, but for my use and a lot of home users, using only a track or 2 or 4, it's not as much of an issue, but add compression on an already noisy track and it's pretty bad, which is why i use it only when i have to or in a unit that is a compressor and a mic pre.

if you're doing something commercial, you need really high quality gear and a noise free space and the best cables, mics, pres, converters, compressors, recorders, or it'll be there, and then there's the problem of external noise, like my art tube pac, i have to put it in a closet. whereas if you have a control room, the external noises are insulated from the studio.

i also have the presonous tubepre and it sucks for high gain, but it's ok if the dials are near the center marks, bring it up and the noise is too much. but my m-audio dmp3 has more useable gain - it's clean way up to near the top, i also now use the balanced lines and that's also a big big improvement becuase i don't need as much gain and the noise is suppressed, and there seems to be a better correspondance betweeen the metering onthe unit and on my mixer for some technical reason i don't know how to explain.

Yeah,...

too bad is so gd ugly.

and for how long are they gonna beat the dead mr8 horse?

no way in hell would i ever bother with another mr frankenstein 8 incarnation, end it already...expand the vf line or whatever others they have

that motherboard must be really really cheap to keep expanding for them to squeeze more units from it, no thank you, start from scratch, go back to the drawing board, enuf with calling 8-tracks 16 and 4-tracks 8, etc.

either you have enuf faders for all your tracks or it's not counted as a track, go away.

I don't think it's available yet. The only place I could find information on the Fostex site was in the press release section.

But it is advertized on certain music instrument sales sites...
