MR8 Drums Sync Question

I am using a PC and MR8 to record different parts of a song. The PC generates the drum track and other basic parts, which are then transferred to the MR8 as WAV files. Then other live parts are added and moved back to PC. This process works well.

However the drum track sounds somewhat poor. I have a separate extertnal Alesis drum machine that produces much better drum sounds. I can use the PC to send MIDI data to the drum machine, and then send the output to the MR8 for recording. This also works well, however the issue is getting the resulting drum WAV track synced up with the final result back in the PC.

Any tricks and/or ideas on how to make this work more smoothly?

midi sync

i think this is how it works (great guitar sounds ed)

in system menu, set midi sync out to mtc, then set the frame rate, enagle external midi devise to sync to mtc

should start at absoulte zero

I saw that, but it's not clear how that will do anything for the drum track. The MR8 has no MIDI track for the drum info. That is stored on PC. I don't see a way to get that from PC into the MR8, so the output can to to the Alesis drum unit. It seems this is used to trigger an external sequencer that already contains MIDI data.

What I am doing now is to manuall record the drum track, move back to PC, and manually adjust the WAV until it "sounds" synced.

Also, the mixed result (minus vocals which have not been done yet) is also on the FTP site.

On the drum sync issue, tried the following without any success:

1. Used PC to produce a drums-only MIDI file
2. Managed to record the MIDI file into the Alesis HR-16.
3. Alesis plays the track correctly.
4. Enabled the MIDI options on the MR8
5. Connected MR8 to Alesis MIDI In
6. Playing MR8 data fails to start playback on Alesis

The manual approach of recording Alesis unit to MR8 audio in works, but is tricky to sync end result back on PC, as you have to manually edit WAV file to get extra stuff out and have it start at just the right time.

i see

thats what i have to do also, unles one of my drummer buddies stopes buy, wish i could have been more help, always sounds s cut and dry in the manual but......

And here I was under the false assumption that midi syncing was a breeze...

Got the MIDI sync stuff working. One problem was that the MIDI in cable was not pushed in far enough (the PC MIDI cable end is one size and my spare was another size).

Have to set the MR8 for MIDI CLK rather than MTC for the Alesis HR-18 drum machine. Then the issue is to get the offset in the MIDI track on the HR-16 to a value so that both start at the same time. An offset of about -32/384 ths was needed. Not both play in sync as desired.

The nice part about this is the ease of adjustment of the drum track for things like bass volume, pan control, and other issues to make it fit right.
