Pretend Action Guy (PAG)
I'm seriously considering buying an MR8 but I do have a couple of questions about the S/PDIF feature on this.
1. The S/PDIF output jack on this thing looks like an RCA jack, right?
2. I have an S/PDIF input & output on my PC which I use to record. Will the MR8 allow me to connect to the PC and let me record tracks directly on my PC in real time?

mr8

no, i dont think so , you must record to the mr8, then transfer files through the usb port.... i use the mr8 because there are too many issues recording to the pc, latency, soundcard setup, and it goes on and on, it works very well and there are no recording problems like you get trying to record to the pc

s/pdif

two things.

1) the s/pdif connector is not a (rca type) coaxial. it is the fiber optic toslink kind of connector.

2) you cant really send stuff out "real time". you can take the audio out, but it is much better to record onto the MR-8, and then move the WAVE files onto the computer.

The S/PDIF connector (optical) is there to export a stereo mix out to your DAT or whatever 'master' component you choose to export to.
If your master component won't accept a toslink type lightpipe connector, you will have to get a Optical/Coax adapter... I've seen those types of things pop up on Ebay for around $20 quite frequently, including the Fostex 'COP' adapter.
But if you're just going to be exporting out to your computer, I would just follow DiT & RadioRick's suggestion and send the files through USB (or Card Reader depending on your OS).

Yes, you COULD use it to transfer digitally (in real time) to a PC (assuming your PC has a SPDIF input) but why bother unless your PC lacks USB. A more common use would be for mixing down digitally to a CD or MiniDisc recorder.

The SPDIF is also only active for 44.1K recordings.

digital transfer

you can NOT transfer files in real time, in order to do that you have to go into the main menu and select the output from this port, which means you have to STOP recording in order to do it,,,,, so you cannot choose this option while recording....

this is ment for transfer to cd burner only ...... manual page 48.....
