MR-8 USB connection

A couple of times when I have attached the MR-8 to the computer(Windows XP) the connection didn't take. I had to go into the device manager once and prompt it to search for new devices. Another time as I was scratching my head trying to figure out what was wrong, the connection took all of a sudden out of the blue.

Does this sound like an MR-8 problem, or a problem with the cable,or USB port or computer software.

Any input would be helpful.
 
That's happened to me on occasion (XP) but it usually pops up sooner or later. I think it just depends on how you do it. Even if I have to go into the device manager to bring it up it doesn't seem to have any ill effects on anything. I never really gave it much thought until now.

In my computer manual (I also have XP), when hooking up a printer via USB it says that you should hook the printer up with the PC off and then turn it on. Maybe this is why? I'll be hooking mine up this weekend (MR-8 via USB). I guess I'll find out.
 
I usually do that anyway, sometimes I get in a hurry. You can also wait until the computer goes "to sleep".

Same thing here. The USB connection is made after a pot of coffee and a few choice words (not sure if it smells the java or hears me ranting /smile). Seriously though, it's just that the USB needs time for the init to take place. This also happens on almost all USB devides btw. ;)
 
Card readers are the way to go

I've run into this same problem using other USB devices e.g. digital cameras. If you get a USB CF card reader (they're less than $20 on Amazon or TigerDirect or even Wal-Mart), you can just leave it plugged in all the time and when you plug in a card it shows up immediately as another drive.
 
That's happened to me as well. It's like it needs a minute or so to "take". I've tried going into "My Documents" and sometimes that helps.
 
I started going into USB mode on the MR-8 and with the computer turned on plugging the USB cord into the computer. When I do this the computer immediately recognizes the MR-8 everytime. I am running XP.
 
I just go in and out of USB mode on the MR-8 until it takes on the PC, it usually takes about 3 tries. Of course I can just wait until my PC recognizes it but where is the fun in that?

Clif, when you transfer separate tracks to your computer do you do anything with the adl file or just transfer the tracks?

I don't even mess with it (ADL). I use the wave manager (available at Fostex website). It uses my USB to rip the tracks right off of the MR-8. They sit in a special file folder that I have designated and I can then rename them if I want. I just add them to club tracks one by one and they sync up perfectly.

Clif, I have the wave manager and didn't even think anything about it. So I get to the step where I have hooked up my MR-8 to the PC do I then open up the wave manager and the files will be in it or I need to put them there?
 
with the USB cable connected, you need to set the MR-8 to USB mode. When that happens, your computer will ask you what to do with the USB connection. I choose the "do nothing" option. Then open up the MR-8 wave manager program. All of the track boxes should have check marks next to them. leave the ones checked that you wish to import then simply click on the "import" tab. The computer will then ask you if it is "okay" to imort those wav files, just click "ok". The process only takes a few moments, just be sure you know where those wave files a re being sent to and you should be set.
