Hi All. New to the board. Lot's of good stuff here.

My question is... I've been doing my final mixdown right in the MR-8, bouncing tracks 1-4 to 5&6, recording again on 1-4 then doing a final mixdown of 1-6 onto 7&8. I'll then convert to a .wav file and transfer it to my MAC for a CD burn. My results have been good but not great. It doesn't sound the same as when I listen to it on the MR-8. It seems whatever effect I use (delay, for example) is not as pronounced when I get the wav file onto my MAC.

I'm wondering if I should be doing my final mixdown to something else. If so... what??

Thanks All. Have a great holiday!

mixdown

try n track they have a free demo version, you just transfer the tracks to pc and mic and master there, only 49.00 u.s.

N Track is not available for Mac. Audacity is a nice freeware program for mixdown. Pretty featureless but free.

My view is that mixing on the PC is the only way to go, regardless of PC type or software.

You always have more options, more tracks, and more flexibility in the final result.

You want to record each track separately and never combine tracks until the final PC mix. That way you can easily end up with 16 or more original digital tracks for mixdown.

Good luck with the MR-8 Mikey T!

It's new to me too. At this point, I've just been mixing straight from the MR-8 to an external CD burner. Pretty good results, but limited to how many tracks you can use and of course no EQ. I just personally don't like to bounce tracks.

Hey Ed (or anybody else),

Which software program do you prefer?

Which one do you think is the most user friendly?

The one feature I definitely want is to be able to mix and add effects etc. in real time. I have to be able to hear what I'm doing as I'm doing it. I might go for n track as a starter.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread to ask about software. I'm not 100% on the protocol, I'm afraid ;-)

Any suggestions/insights are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kester

Mikey,
Although I agree with some of the others about the fact that mixing on a pc is much better than directly on the MR-8, I have had good results doing the mixdown on the MR-8. Effects were just as prevalent after mixdown as they were before. What are you using for reference (speakers or headphones)?
There should be some programs to use with a Mac. As far as I know Audacity is not multitrack software, but a wav editor. What you could do is do the mixdown as far as getting the levels on each track where you want them and then transfer to your pc to add effects and burn to CD.

N-track, N-track, N-track. That is the answer to all your questions. Might as well go ahead and pay for it.

Welcome to the board Mikey. Shame you have a mac...n-Track works so well otherwise.

PS....Hey KD, you hooked up and ready to go yet?

You All are so nice. Thanks for all of your replys.

I'm using headphones for reference and an older piece of software for MAC called Sound Sculptor. It's fairly intuative with a good amount of features. Yesterday I downloaded ProTools Free and tomorrow I'm going to learn how to do brain surgery. Why not...same thing.

I'm going to do a test this week. I know someone that has a "professional" quality CD burner and a mixing board with EQ and in & out's for each channel. We'll see where those two pieces of hardware take me. I've got a feeling this is going to cost me.

If anyone is interested I'll post my findings.

Thanks again.

I should be shortly after Christmas. I am supposed to get some gift cards and will make a decision on a new pc or hard drive after I see how much $$ the cards are. I plan on moving quickly after Christmas. I'll let you know.

one thing i have noticed

you cant mix effects with headphones.
it'll get you every time
listen to it on outside speakers. any speaker will help
