I put together a song last night for a friend to write vocals and lead guitar to. I have not heard a heavy metal MR-8 recording yet with distorted guitars, so I thought I would throw one into the mix. I am not much of a guitar player but it was fun anyway.

Just me on bass, DR-5, POD with Ibanez RG.

Let me know what you think:)

The song is called "untitled" since I have no name for it yet.

Man I'm blown away! You don't know what kind of tortue this is...my mr-8 won't be in for another 3 weeks....but I got it for $240 so I'll be ok. The sound quality is just amazing! As a fellow pod user, what kind of amp/settings ect. are you using. Anyways it sounds great!
Looking foward to hearing the vocals!

cool tune. I'd love to hear with real keys and a real bass. Hey, send me the midi files and I'll use some high quality samples and you can use those in the mixdown. What do you think?

Thanks! I used the rectifier setting on the POD with the drive at 3 o clock, the bass at 11 o clock, the middle at 10 o clock the treble at 11 o clock and I believe the channel volume is all the way down. It is actually a user patch that my brother dialed in yesterday.

lol the bass is actually real.

Yeah I would love to re mix it with better sounds.

hmm I am trying to think how I can get those MIDI files to my PC from the Dr-5. My pc does not have a MIDI input. Let me know if you can help me do this.

I am also a "midiot" so I don't have any experience using MIDI.

damn.. you don't have a sblive card or anything with a joystick port? getting the midi files out of the dr5 are easy.... if you have a midi connection.

Yeah not even a joystick port, and I just got it last year. Oh well....

OH MAN!!!!! Now that is cool. Very very cool, in fact. More and more I'm learning that with a little imagination, this little machine can do just about everything. HMMMM, heavy metal ukulele?

do yourself a favor and get a cheap sound-card with a joystick port. you'll be able to sync your dr-5, mr-8 and pc all up and have a lot more options. hell, you could probably ask around and find a cheap sblive for free. a joystick to midi cable connection is like $10. i'm a midiot and it's not as hard as you'd think.

That would rule!

I have been working on a new form of metal called "death funk" I'll write a song as soon as I can get fast enough to play it! lol

Clif,

It would cost a bit more than the SB/Joystick thing, but consider a USB MIDI port. It's nice since you can carry it with you and use it on other computers.

Clif,
That's a good tune! I can hear guitar parts all over the place in there. I'm trying to get this dr5 figured out. Do you compose in steps or real time?

I actually do both. Except when using real time I slow the tempo way way down. The piano stuff was done by steps though.

Clif,
Unless I'm reading the manual wrong, The step writing is done as a series of patterns which are done one measure at a time? Hope you don't mind helping me out a little. You seem to have this thing down pretty good.

I 'd love to be of help:)

I change all my patterns to 16/4 time first of all. It saves a lot or work by connecting a few large patters then tons of "1 measure patterns." The step writing is done note for note within measure for measure, the key when writing note for note is to use the wheel to determine what note value you are writing i.e eight note 16th note etc. At that point you hit record (second time to put it on step mode) then hit play to start inputing the actual notes. The confusion is while you are putting in the notes lets say a 16th note piano run, the dr-5 is playing back your pattern at normal tempo as you put the notes in, so it is easy to be thrown off by what you hear. I tend to hit stop and scroll through my notes to see what I have entered. fortunately the dr-5 will play back each note that you entered as you use the FWD/ RWD buttons. I hope this wasn't too confusing.

Clif,
I haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet, I think I get the drift of what you're saying.....I may have to print it out and study it as I make my first attempt. Thanks for the help.
