Taking the slow road
I got the MR-8 $300 then I got a preamp, ~$100, patchbay $50, (to patch in effects and eq) EQ $150, another pre $100, compressor $250. cables ~$50?
Of course I got a lot of other stuff, but just for using the MR-8 I got most of this stuff and if I had my current DAW, most of it would be in it or not needed. it has eq, comp, pres, no need to patch.
I didn't include 10 mics, stands, cans, older effects I had, old comp I had, old mixer I had, old drum machine I had, studio monitors, and other cables for that stuff, because, I would need, and use this stuff for any situation.
so the point is that both ways, either piecing it together or getting the all-in-one, it's ~$1,000. And the time and shipping and all over a 2 year period and the research for all of those components is huge, but in that time, my new unit also came down in price a few C's. But now I have both, so I have duplication and ~$2,000 of stuff (not including the other stuff I'd use in either case) Plus 16 tracks, editing, touch screen, cdrw, hours of recording time, oh yea, the CF cards add ~$200 for those, and that sickly massive thread here and research for that. I haven't seen that old thread in a while, good riddance.... So it really adds up. Then again, I did learn a lot about gear, not sure if that's a great thing....
