MR-8 and stuff I got for it vs. my new all-in-one DAW

Taking the slow road
I got the MR-8 $300 then I got a preamp, ~$100, patchbay $50, (to patch in effects and eq) EQ $150, another pre $100, compressor $250. cables ~$50?

Of course I got a lot of other stuff, but just for using the MR-8 I got most of this stuff and if I had my current DAW, most of it would be in it or not needed. it has eq, comp, pres, no need to patch.

I didn't include 10 mics, stands, cans, older effects I had, old comp I had, old mixer I had, old drum machine I had, studio monitors, and other cables for that stuff, because, I would need, and use this stuff for any situation.

so the point is that both ways, either piecing it together or getting the all-in-one, it's ~$1,000. And the time and shipping and all over a 2 year period and the research for all of those components is huge, but in that time, my new unit also came down in price a few C's. But now I have both, so I have duplication and ~$2,000 of stuff (not including the other stuff I'd use in either case) Plus 16 tracks, editing, touch screen, cdrw, hours of recording time, oh yea, the CF cards add ~$200 for those, and that sickly massive thread here and research for that. I haven't seen that old thread in a while, good riddance.... So it really adds up. Then again, I did learn a lot about gear, not sure if that's a great thing....

Ahh c'mon. You act like we weren't having fun J.

What about the comradery? The brotherhood?
How can you forget... IT IS RED???

What was the 16 track you bought again? Don't you use your external effects for it?

And aren't you having fun with it all?

And it is RED... (but they make it in black now too!)

:D

my cost

mr8 300.00
already had a 12 channel mixer
behringer mixer for phantom power49.00
mxl 990 59.00
already had a full pa system, but didnt need much of it for recording
have 2) 31band eqs, digital delay, compressor, but dont use any of it
already had the sm 57 and all the cables...

n track. 50.00
card reader. 15.00

Plus... it's so very red....

  1. mr8 - $300
  2. 256 mb CF - $110
  3. 512 mb CF - $18
  4. SM57 - $98 (pretty sure it was)
  5. SPB1 - $81
  6. ntrack- $50
$650

Of course the wife would have NEVER let me spend $650 on a single thing, so it doesn't really matter....
Already had the Mackie 808 PA head, which I've been using for pre's. I'll be ordering a DMP3 during or before the first week of march, so tack on $141, but I think it would have been/will be useful regardless...

junplugged- which 16 track did you get? fostexV160???

I've been looking at a Firepod for a while now but I can't get over the color. Now if it came in red....

RED RED RED I too am considering upgrading to a firepod, but like you said it is not red :)

I saw the black one at music store this weekend, it just didn't have that warmth of ol' red. Red rocks.

Looks like most of us have had to spend a little more on red.

I just pulled out my dusty 15 year old simple midi sequencer, now I have mix automation on my Korg.

MR-8... free (it was a gift)
AT Pro 100 mic... $80
Digitech Vocalist Performer... free, it was a gift
SanDisk 512 CF Card..$99

Realizing you spent this money and can't do shit with it... priceless...
:D

Gifts are never free, I got my MR8 as a gift, and SHE got a gold bracelet worth the same.....

In my case, it was a birthday gift from a friend of mine. As was the Vocalist, from a different friend. My wife hasn't given me anything but a pat on the back when I make a good song (so far, they have been few and far between, LOL  )

Damn, I'm lucky if my friends realize what month my B-day is in!
Ditto on the wife thing though. She always makes a point of showing up at work to embarass me with baloons or flower though, and every year when I see her coming I think "maybe there's a mic in her pocket, maybe she got me the MD421II... It's possible... she could have..."
But no. It's always something to embarass me, and everyone goes "ahhh, ohhh your wife is sooooo SWEET!!!"

It's out of pure desire to see me uncomforably embarassed, there is nothing nice about it    :D

I guess I am lucky that my wife has an aversion to going to anyplace military. I couldn't get her to come visit me on any ship I was stationed on, and she rarely, if ever comes to visit me here are the office.
I wish she would try something like that to embarrass me. Admit it, if she didn't do it one year, for whatever reason, you'd be mad that she forgot! ;)

the wife that rocks...

one year an acustic pickup, another year a bigger cf card, another time headphones... and she got mt the mxl990 for xmas hahhaah bless her hear she really is cool, and im a very lucky man hhahahhaha

wow, imagine if your lady was also a musician and into home rec? We'd go bankrupt even faster.

I can say with 100% uLtRa-honesty that I would not be mad.

DAVE IN TOLEDO!!! Where have you been hiding, or have I just missed you? At any rate it's good to know you still come through here occasionally....

You are a lucky man. I will be there too, when I get out from under this military contract and can make some real money. Then my wife will not say no when I tell her that an RNC is an absolute NEED, not a want... :D

Well, perhaps she should change her tactics, and not embarrass you. I don't like having my picture taken, so I feel your pain everytime my wife wants me to pose for pics. She knows I hate it, but she never stops insisting...
