MR-8 .ADL file

...also just tried creating a track completely outside of the MR-8 (created a MIDI file and converted to WAV with Virtual Sound Canvas) and copied it into a new MR-8 song. It works great - even in perfect sync with a matching signature/tempo map on the MR-8.

This may not be a big deal to some users, but the ability to start a session with externally created WAV data is where the MR-8 blows all other "card recorders" out of the water.

That IS indeen an outstanding discovery! Good job MISTER-X.

Thanks guys! (or gals...)

I'm so pissed at manufacturers that lock users out - kudos to Fostex for giving us a recorder (again) that we can turn into something even better.

JESSST A LITTLE SLOW

I find myself in a situation where I have WAY too much information to digest. This technology is light years ahead of my capacity to use it to it's fullest extent. This board has been a godsend for me. With the help of guys like you, I may catch up in the next ten years or so!

The more I work with this machine, and the more I read it about it the more I am amazed at just what it can do. I'm starting my second song, and I haven't even come close to using all of the functions yet. Thanks MRX, and every one else, for posting all this great stuff.

mrx,
Just went through the file I downloaded from your original post (a little slower than the first time). There's a whole lot of information in there!! It looks to me like someone with your knowledge, armed with that information could actually create a multitrack program for the computer that would specifically communicate with the mr-8. Am I wrong? I mean that file speaks to stuff like wave editing and the like that would be intersting to explore. Let me know what your thoughts are on this. I know enough about programming to be dangerous!

The ADL file is nothing more than a text file that is edited in a certain format. Making a program to produce such a file would involve using the FileSystemObject in windows which is referenced through the Microsoft Scripting Library.

As far as direct communication, that may not be very easy. For one thing only one master at a time can have access to the CompactFlash the way it is set up. That means when the MR8 accesses the drive, the Computer cant, and vise versa. What would be really slick if a device could be built that would allow a harddrive to be hooked up to the compact flash port.

Frankly, there are just too many solutions that would make such a marriage not needed. Just too easy to copy files than to integrate across platforms.

The information in that link covers an entire standard for audio interchange, of which the ADL is part. What this information can be used for is to create a better version of Wav Manager - for example, new songs could be created from scratch with pre-existing wav files, tempo/time signature, locate points, etc.

What would be handy would be a pc-based mastering program that works with the MR-8. I know there are a thousand programs out there, but I find I'm recording guitar parts, copying them to PC, then doing vocals, copying to PC, more guitars, etc. It would be cool if all of that could go under one master folder for the project and automatically come up in the right place in a simple multitrack app.

Anyone here have any luck with n-Track? I checked out the forum and it sounds like it's a buggy piece of crap.

1. Ntrack is a great program, and very economical. I would not gauge what you read on these forums until you try the program out. Unfortunately, forum are full of complainers. These people usually only represent a very small, and unregistered, portion of the people who use it. You can try it for free, so what have you got to loose?

2. All you would have to do is master the files straight from the Flash card. You could edit the files right where they are. The PC based recording software does not care where the data is. The only problem is your USB transfer speed. If that is a factor, just edit, and add your effects to one wave file at a time.

What would be cool is if there were a utility that would import and export in and out of the PC based software. Like read the files from thje MR8, then auto import the minto Logic Audio, Magix, or cakewalk so you can extend the amount of tracks by syncing the DAW with the MR8.

I have had great success doing this already, but with the right program, it would make the import/export alot easier. Especially with loops.

Phineas,

I looked past the static and checked out n-Track - I love it! Everyone should check it out - awesome tool.

Regarding WAV management, I'm thinking that a simple file manager to copy the files off the MR-8, store them on a PC, and have an 'audition' option so they could be copied with understandable names would help. That way once they get modified in a DAW, the copies could be renamed and bounced back to the MR-8. Another nice touch would be the ability auto-generate songs with new backings - for example, if guitars are added to a drum/bass track, have a simple way to archive those and combine into a song with that stuff mixed to one track.

Basically 'document management' for anyone out there in the manufacturing design world.

That could be done with a very simple VB application using the FileSystemObject. That will give me something to try during lunch one day. Also, depending on the operating system, the audition feature is already built in to the operating system(ME, 2000, and XP have this) Select the file, and a small media player appears in the left panel.

I knew there would be something arise from this....you go guys!

None of it would be a problem with VB - like all software though, the hard part is creating a useful tool.

Wow, my head is spinning!!!

I've been using a Roland VS840ex for a couple years and recently picked up the MR8. I like the ease of use, portablility etc. but i'm new to sending the stuff to PC to mix etc.

What is n-track?

Is it relatively easy to use?

Can you use windows 98?

sounds like i can record some things and then dump them on the PC.

clear the card and record some more stuff....dump on PC...

Mix together with this n-track audio program? tweak it etc.

Like i said...my head is spinning!

Don't feel bad marko,
I've had mine since Christmas, and I'm nowhere near where I need to be yet. I figure a few more tunes on this thing and I'll be ready for some "serious" recording. The stuff I'm doing now will be good enough for copyrighting, I'll go back later and re-do them once I figure this thing out.
